Meet the Greatest Culinary Minds in Canada

Leah to Micaela: “You’re wittier than I am. You write the intro. Plus I’m a little bit drunk”

So here we go – a video was created for you, take a glimpse into our life in Calgary this week. The boys in the video (in order of appearance) are Kent, Tim and Tim’s best friend Jack. Mic, Kent and Jack are all visiting Tim and I in Calgary from Ontario for the week and a good time is being had by all. See for yourself!

P.S. Yes, Tetris is the best video game created by mankind and we are very serious about it.

Vegas, baby!

Denis and I took today off to Get Sh*t Done, as we like to say.   We got the worst part of our day done at 9am at the dentist’s office.  Thank goodness for super-early 8am appointments!  I can’t believe I was able to stay awake through it as I’m usually still in bed at 8.  The passport office was surprisingly fast, and we have the good fortune of parking at a meter that had 44 minutes left on it.  Sisters, my parking karma was Louie-like.

Finally, the big news of the day: we’ve booked our honeymoon!  We have been looking at brochures and websites and considering our options for the past couple of weeks, talking to friends and family, and of course looking at pricing.  While we had originally talked about taking a trip to Vancouver and doing some sightseeing in British Columbia, after thinking about what we wanted to do we narrowed our choices down to either a Caribbean cruise or Las Vegas.  The verdict?

Vegas, baby!

We’re going to Vegas! (as if you couldn’t tell from the title…)

I’m dying to see a Cirque du Soleil show and I’m eager to take a day trip to see the Hoover Dam.  Den enjoys playing the slots (the first time we ever went to a casino together, he won over $500, while last year I had some good luck here in London!).  We’re not huge gamblers though and we’ll definitely not be spending every day in the casinos!

We’re going a week after the wedding and will be staying at the MGM Grand.  I’m so excited!   Our landlord thinks that going to Vegas is “cheesy”, but I disagree.  Besides, isn’t your honeymoon supposed to be a time to relax and have fun with your new spouse?  It doesn’t matter where we are as long as we’re having fun.

I’ve gotten some advice already about what to see and do (such as the fountains at the Bellagio), but if you’ve ever been to Vegas (or even just want to) we’d love to know what your favorite attractions are!

I love you more than…

love-2361

I love you more than Nutella

I love you more than Botox

I love you more than french kissing my puppy

I love you more than Jesus (ps.i’m a jewish girl).

I love you more than Pooh loves his Honey.

I love you more than comments on my blog.

I love you more than the smell of old books.

I love you more than sleeping diagonally across the bed, so I’ll move over if you want.

I love you more than pigs.

No folks, Lauren is not in love.  And no. I’m not Jewish either, and I don’t get botox.  I do however love the smell of old books, comments on my blog and Nutella.  These “I love you more than…” came from a site called I Love You More Than Blank.  As most people who have been reading this site for a while know, I love things like Postsecret, Six Word Memoirs, and Group Hug.  They just hit that right spot, like those pictures Mic posted earlier.  You can even follow “I love you more than” on Twitter!

Any more of these awesome websites on the internet I should know about?

My love for the Bachelor and other such cheesiness.

Judging from the comments on Leah’s post earlier today, a lot of our readers are going through some January blues. Personally I always love January at first- it’s a new year where nothing at all has gone wrong yet.

But it’s the end of January now and while I have to say my life is pretty good, I do think that these frigid temperatures have gone on for long enough. I mean it’s been well below freezing for the past few weeks and while I would love to face cold like this girl does…

…I’m afraid I’m more inclined to hibernate like this girl:

Helping to keep me sane this January?

One of my favourite reality shows, The Bachelor. Jen can attest to the fact that I spend most of the show either hiding my face from pure embarassment for the girls that go straight in for the makeout session that Jason clearly is not interested in, or yelling at him for having no idea about which girl is right for him. He did redeem himself in my eyes, however, at the end of last night’s episode by kicking off three girls instead of two. They were alllll wrong for him. :)

My pick?

Also making me smile this month – cheesy things I come across on blogs. I’m a sucker for cheesiness. But you need things like this saved on your computer so you have something besides word documents and power point presentations on the computer to look at when the internet is down.

I could go on forever, but instead it’s time to get our readers to focus on the positive – What’s making you smile, making your heart flutter, or making you yell at the tv with (all ingood  fun, of course) rage this month?

January, I hate you.

I hate January.  I really do.  I promised myself today that I will never have a child born in January, I will just put a plug in it and tell that child to wait.  Momma hasn’t gotten out of bed in 30 days.  January is the longest month of the year for some reason, and this year it dragged and dragged.  I don’t even know if I am going to last another week.  January is the month keeping me from having visitors from home.  January is the month I got credit card fraud, and my bank decided I didn’t need to know until my card was declined and I had to call them – “Oh, it looks here like we cut your card off because of fraud.”  What the eff, is it not important that I know this?  January is the month my debit card failed the same week my credit card did, and my boyfriend left for Panorama, BC that day leaving me with no access to my funds at all.  January is the month I sucked at my job.  January is the month Tim didn’t work any day shifts leaving us an hour during lunch to see each other.  January is the month that I tried to make new friends that didn’t want to be made back.  January is the month I fell really hard and hurt my elbows (okay, that one was just whining).
For the duration of the month of January, you may find me going about my duties with a hoodie on, hood up, with the strings pulled real tight so no one can look in.
I’m sorry for this negative, whiny post but I needed to let it out.  The pit in my stomach is growing by the second.  My plan is to go to bed in my favourite pyjamas, with a glass of wine and a good book, in my super comfy bed and wake up tomorrow and take a big breath and tell the world that it’s showtime.

What are you whining about lately? Let it out.

The Pie Plate Search

I love baking pies, and cookies and muffins!

My favourite kind of pie is raspberry pie (which I have actually never baked), but I also adore peach pie and a good old fashioned apple pie.   For the longest time I have been searching for a nice pie plate.  Mom and my mother in law were also searching to buy one for me and both came up empty handed.

Recently I decided that I need to become more spontaneous during the week and do more then work, go to the barn, make dinner, relax/play practice/go to brownies and sleep. Time is flying by and I need to make the most of it.  So when our friend Allison decided to hold a Pampered Chef party at her house near St. Catherines, on a Thursday night, Mic and I decided to check it out!  I really wasn’t planning on buying anything but once I got there and saw Allison’s beautiful pie plate (she loves making pies!) I had to buy one.  So pampered chef got some of my money and I get a pretty stoneware pie plate and all was well!

That was until I got home and saw a value village bag on the counter and opened it to find a pie plate inside!  Mom happened to go to thrifting and was on the lookout for a pie plate, found one and happened to give it to me on the same day I bought one.  What are the odds of that?

So now I have 2 pie plates and lots of baking to do!

Exceptions to the Rule

As it is mentioned in our “About” section, we may not always be blonde, but we will always be five. This post is dedicated to bringing to attention the times in our life when we WEREN’T blonde (shock and horror!). However, I will not be including the brief period of time when Erica cut off all of her hair and dyed it red.  We try to ignore that period, and Erica – YOU brought it up in your 95 things, so you can’t get mad at me for talking about it now! HA!

I don’t think these photos are not in chronological order, just to let you know. But there is a small chance that they might be.

First, we have the beautiful Kate. In the winter of 2004/2005 Kate dyed her hair a deep chestnut brown. She didn’t tell ANYONE she was going to do it, just showed up at my residence one day to pick me up for … some reason. I recognized that silver Jetta, but who was that GORGEOUS brunette driving it?

Kate

That weekend, Kate and I went to our ski hill to teach snowboarding, our winter jobs, and when we walked in my Mom said to someone – “I didn’t know Leah was bringing a friend home this weekend!” Very surprising to her, but it was her own daughter that she did not recognize.

Next, we have Micaela circa summer of 2005 (I think?). I have no idea  what inspired this, I just remember how awesome it was!

Pinkhead

I am about 45487654 beers and 1000x more laughs than that to remember why Mic decided to become a … pinkhead? But I do remember that a lot of good times were had with the pink and blonde hair, and oh, how that girl could pull it off!

Next, we have Micaela again! This was  February 2006 at an annual Ball held by my University.  Mic decided to become a brunette. Maybe she was jealous of Kate?

Leah, Mic and Kate

Halloween 2005, Mic and I went to our hometown Halloween dance dressed up at Thing One and Thing Two, and please excuse the horrible quality of this photo, but I had SO MUCH FUN with blue hair!

Mic & Lee

And then there was the unfortunate incident at Kate’s Bachelorette Party where I messed up the camera settings and everybody had purple hair that evening! I secretly liked it.

Leah & Jenn

And then there was the time two nights ago when I was playing with taaz.com to bug Tim and pretend that I was going to dye my hair dark red, then secretly really loved it. Seriously though, I think there would be a serious possibility of risking my relationship if I was anything but blonde. Tim has a serious thing for blondes.

Redhead

So there you go! A documentation of the hair activities of the blondes over the years.  Sorry Lauren for the lack of mention in this post, but I can’t think of any times you were anything but blonde! If there are any occasion, and any photo evidence then throw ‘er in there for the world to see.

I would also like to take this opportunity to note that with any hair colour changes, especially Kate and Mic’s dark ‘dos, it takes about two washes for the blonde to start shining through again. We are blonde through and through and it would take a lot of expensive shampoo, even more expensive trips to the salon and a lot of time devoted to keeping our hair that dark.

95 Things about Erica

1. I am a hard-core procrastinator. A professional, if you will. Want an example? I’ll tell ya later.

2. After we had been dating a few weeks, the “friend” who set up me and Denis tried to break us up. It didn’t work (obviously) and be the end of the summer she was fired from her job and I was promoted to take her place. Erica FTW!

3. I love my name. First, middle, and last. However, I will be happily changing it when I get married (in three months and five days).

4. I like being called “Er” (pronounced “err”) or “Eri” (pronounced “err-y”). I especially like being called Er or Eri out of the blue from someone aside from a family member. Spontaneous and fun :)

5. I love grey sweaters. I have at least 7.

6. I can be very sarcastic.

7. If it were not for Denis, I would forget to take my medication WAY too much.

8. If I don’t take this medication, I will have seizures.

9. I have not had a seizure in almost 2 years!

10. I have had seizures in very embarrassing places, including a movie theatre in the middle of the film Sweet Home Alabama. Did you know that when a film projector is stopped, it can’t be simply started up again? I may have ruined a lot of dates that night. I’m sure I also freaked a lot of people out.

100 Things About Kate

1. I was born in 1985

2. I was born in the year of the OX. 2009 is also the year of the OX it *according to the Chinese* should be my good luck year.

3. I am a LEO

4. I love reading my horoscope, and seeing if it comes true

5. My favourite month of the year is July (also my birth month!)

6. I have a hard time remembering dates that involve odd numbers.  I could never remember my friend Allison’s birthday, whose birthday is September 27th, but now I can always remember now because it is 1 month before my anniversary!

100 Things About Micaela.

1. I have always loved those glass cake holders that are on a pedestal with a glass lid.

2. I love writing and buying journals to write in. When I get a new one that I love it’s hard for me not to abandon my previous one. Sometimes I compromise and just alternate.

3. I never watch scripted TV but I love reality TV.

4. I don’t really like watching movies. I’ll always choose something more social if I have the choice.

5. I love wearing dresses as much as I can in the summer.

6. I’m a foodie and I love eating so I am very thankful for my top notch metabolism. When I was little I loved eating so much but I was very skinny. Erica asked my dad where all of the food goes and he told her I had a hollow leg.

7. My favourite drink is champagne. I don’t think it’s just for celebrations. I drink it most weekends.

8. I want to be really good at guitar but I hate the process of getting there.

9. I’ve always thought I should be Swedish or Norwegian.

10. I block things out really well. Sometimes after a class someone will say, “didn’t you hear the person behind us that could not stop coughing for the whole class?” and I never hear it.
