Hair is just Hair

We’ve had a few posts here and there about hair colour. Most recent being our guest post by Hope dies Last, about Brunettes Vs Blondes… well I have a bit of a confession or I think I did it again, as Brittney Spears might say.

I went to the hairdresser on Tuesday night and asked for a darker blonde, I was sick of my ugly yellow-toned hair and wanted it brought down a notch or two. And toned down she did. I am convinced my hair is brown. Others are calling it, dirty blonde, dark blonde, and even strawberry blonde.  She said that it would blend into my more natural colour as it grows in, but holy cow this takes a bit of getting used to! It really reminds me of last time I had my hair brown and every morning I would wake up and be like oh my gosh what have  done.

So what do you think? Brown or not?

Sorry about the bed hair…

One behind the cut.

I asked Erica not to kill me for doing this before the wedding! :)

My Life in Photos

It takes awhile, but it’s worth it. Try your very best to find all of the pictures asked for… use facebook or the pictures stored on your computer. If you can’t find one, that’s okay, but leave all questions in the survey for others to find. Tag the people in your photos, and anyone you think may be interested in completing this. :)

3. A picture with a former crush

He was friends with my friend Amanda and I met him on campus with her and thought he was awesome, and basically arranged it so that we became best friends, by telling him that I wanted to be his best friend. We went from not knowing each other to being best friends, and it worked out very well as you can see here! He had a long term girlfriend so our friendship never progressed past the proposal on the dance floor.

Blog Swap: Hope Dies Last

As you will notice from other 20Something bloggers, today is Blog Swap Day! Fiveblondes is very fortunate to welcome Hope Dies Last to our comfy little home today. Enjoy, and check out her wonderful blog while you are at it!

Hi! I’m Hope and I am taking over 5 Blondes today as part of the 20SB Blog Swap! I usually post over at Hope Dies Last about love, relationships and the like. Today, I thought I would do something different. I thought I would address an extremely controversial topic. And I thought I would do it in the lion’s den; I’m insane like that. This is an age-old issue, a hotly contested matter as old as time.

Yes, people, I am talking about that divisive battle of the blondes versus the brunettes*.

I stand before you—here on 5 (beautiful) Blondes–as a representative of the world’s brunettes. Our hair colour is described as mousy and we are often depicted as boring and common. Hair dressers and stylist urge us to ‘get some highlights’ assuring that this will add a glow to our faces. And the best compliment a brunette can receive is that her hair colour is the shade of a decadent 1000 calorie chocolate bar.

Blondes, on the other hand, are considered bubbly, vivacious and they are even supposed to have more fun. Their colour is described as strawberry, golden or platinum. Why are blondes getting all the money making (and deliciously healthy) adjectives?

But–you know–brunettes have also been called mysterious, exotic and sophisticated and we never have to worry about being the pun of any (bad) blond jokes. Plus we all know that in a battle between Serena Van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf, Blair would win each and every time.

History (and pop culture) has shown us that blondes live lives of sad excess; of debauchery. Think of Paris Hilton, Tara Reid, Nicole Richie and even Anna Nicole Smith. The most famous blonde of all time—poor Marilyn Monroe lived a short tragic life; a victim of her own (bottled) hair colour.

Brunettes have also never had to rely on the Hollywood machine to stand up for them. I can’t think of a brunette movie that rivals “Legally Blonde”; the basic premise of which was FOR CRYING OUT LOUD PLEASE TAKE US SERIOUSLY.

No, brunettes are always taken seriously.

We stand tall even when our hair colour gets all the nutty adjectives like almond and walnut. We stand proud in knowing that Brad Pitt chose a brunette (granted I am on Team Aniston on this one) over a honey hued blonde. We stand united and every time a blonde steals the limelight with her gorgeous luminous hair, the bond between us grows stronger and stronger.

And one day—I am certain–we will take over the world.

Are you a bubbly blonde or a mysterious brunette? Who do you think will ultimately win this battle?

*For the sake of my argument, I have not included the jet black or red haired amongst us. Everyone knows they are all far superior.

Tuesdays avec Micaela: Eleven Days and Dress ADD

Although I wish I could just bask in the excitement that is Denis and Erica’s wedding in just eleven days, I feel like I have so much to do in those eleven days that all basking must be held off until next Friday. I’m in my last two weeks of my placement in a grade 7 class and after that I am finished teachers college for good and moving into an apartment in a new city, Toronto with Kent. In the next two weeks I’ll be doing tons of lesson planning, packing all of my belongings, moving four hours away, and being a bridesmaid in my sister’s wedding.

Planning for my own wedding will not be put on hold for the next twelve days, either. This week I’ll be selecting invitations and finishing the guest list, and this weekend I’ll be choosing my wedding music. I also changed my mind about my wedding dress for the fourth, and final, time. Here’s the winner:

Love it? Hate it? (I can take it!) Let me know.

Here’s some teasers of Erica’s dress (Denis, don’t look!)

I never thought I was girly…until now.

I’ve never thought of myself as the girly one in the family until lately.  I was always the one involved in sports and organized activities like ski racing, basketball, soccer, cheerleading, baseball, highland dancing, volleyball.  I still do some of those things, and some of those things the girls did too, but for some reason I just saw myself as the “sporty one” in the family.  Maybe also because I saw myself as more built for sports than the other girls.  This is starting to sound like a “Lauren is better and stronger than her sisters”, but I swear I don’t mean for it to sound like that!  Anyways, the point of this post is to explain my wonder at how I love having long nails, and I love wearing dresses, and curling my hair, and it’s all really weird to me, and maybe it’s because I’m living with 3 boys and it’s making me more girly.

Every year I make the New Years resolution to stop biting my nails, but lets be serious, it never works.  I have stopped biting my nails three times in my life.  Once was for prom in grade 12, once was when I started working at a conservation area/camp ground and decided that cleaning toilets and biting my nails was really gross, and the third time was right now!  Not unlike the other two times, I had a reason for biting….two reasons actually.  One was because I physically could not bite my nails because of the stitches in my mouth, and the other was because of the big wedding, coming up in 16 days!  As of rights now my nails are painted purple, and the only ones that are bitten are my thumbs (I always give myself one or two nails that are okay to bite).  I actually took a break in the middle of writing this and I broke my pinky nail on my backpack at school. :(   The other day after going to Bulk Barn for some study snacks my friend asked me “Hey Lauren, you have nails right? Can you get this bag open?”  My answer (of course), was “OMG KAYL YES I CAN”.  I think I freaked a bunch of people over it by being so excited.

Another thing I’ve started to loove are dresses.  Absolutely love them.  I’m wearing one at school right now actually (sitting on the ground in a room that used to be filled with couches but is now empty), because it is so beautiful out!  I still do like having comfy aspects to my dresses though, like pockets (of course my bridesmaid dress has them!), and wearing shorties underneath.  Also wearing my favourite Steve Madden flats that are unfortunately beginning to die on me from a) wearing them way too much, and b) Kardi loving to eat them too much.   The first thing I’ve started to look at in stores are dresses, and I won’t really look at anything else because nothing else interests me.  I got new shoes for the wedding when the family was here for Easter weekend which you can see in Mic’s Easter weekend post.  You can also see me wearing them while sitting on my couch on the computer…I later went on to take a nap in them.

To end here are a bunch of older pictures of me skiing and playing soccer…just to add some excitement to this post.

Tuesdays with Micaela: Easter weekend in Ottawa

Over Easter weekend I travelled to Canada’s capital city, Ottawa to visit my babiest sister Lauren with Kent, Erica, Denis, and our parents.

Here’s a little photo recap.

We took our friends dog, Eve out for a walk:

Coolest house on the block:

On Easter Sunday we toured the parliament. Lauren and I love the parliamentary library so much that we almost bought library shaped earrings at the gift shop.

Kent in front of the parliament:

Erica in the parliament’s Peace Tower (highest building in Ottawa):

We slept over at Lauren’s place. I’m sure you’ll recognize it even in this small picture as a typical student house. This is where we had sleepovers and watched way too much of My Super Sweet Sixteen.
Funny story: Lauren and I had the tv on Mean Girls when we left with mom to go shopping. Our dad was staying behind and when I asked if he wanted me to remote to switch the channel he said, “No, actually can you turn the volume up?” Despite spending a large portion of his life living with six girly-girls, my dad has managed to remain surprisingly manly, but even the manliest dad has his weak moments, apparently.

After Erica, Denis, and Kent left us on Sunday we visited the Nature Museum. Lauren and I had so much fun with all the interactive games where we got to tape ourselves making chimp calls and bird sounds.

Our not-so-blonde momma (don’t tell her that though):

Me, hanging out in a tree:

The photo ops really were endless:

After the museum we had some snacks at a market/bakery where apparently Obama had recently enjoyed some a cookie. Poor Obama probably felt like he had to order a Canada cookie to show his pride, even though the cookies looked pretty unappetizing and everything else there looked soooo good! At least he’s a good sport. Now they’re milking these cookies for every penny:

Thanks for being so much fun, Lauren! I LOVE Ottawa and will definitely be visiting you next year when I’m living only four hours away instead of nine.

That was our nontraditional Easter weekend, a far cry from our usual which always includes a 9am Catholic mass and way too many Easter dinners and easter egg hunts. I did make Kent an Easter basket though. I couldn’t help myself. I “apparently” didn’t warn him (ie. he didn’t remember me warning him!) I didn’t care though, I love giving him holiday gifts even if I don’t get any in return. My parents have always made us Easter baskets (and gave the three of us plus the two boys one to share this year) and later Kent was very apologetic and decided that he liked the basket idea so much that it will be a tradition from now on. Starting new holiday traditions is my favourite.

Check out the rest of our trip on my flickr!

It's happening. And it's great.

Since graduating about a year ago, and subsequently moving across the country with the boyfriend, I have noticed a lot of changes within myself. Positive, progressive changes that make me feel as though I am growing up. I have always felt grown-up, and have generally been a thought as though I was a mature person, but in the past month or two, I am surprising myself daily.

It’s in cleaning the house and keeping it that way for more than 24 hours, in brushing and flossing twice daily, in washing my face daily and paying more attention to my beauty routine, in making doctors appointments for myself, keeping budgets, and exercising regularly, it’s in cleaning and vacuuming Tim’s car, in making my bed every single day, and in doing groceries on my own. It’s in sitting in a popular bar with my best friend discussing literature. It’s in being on time on a regular basis, and scheduling my days so I can be the most productive, and even in paying more attention to my appearance and the way I am perceived by others.  It’s in going to see a documentary on a Saturday evening, and being told by your tax specialist that you didn’t seem your age, because “people your age usually don’t care about the details, they just want the money.” It’s in thinking about how my actions affect other people, and in finding myself thinking deeply about the things that are important in my life, and what I am looking for in all of my relationships.

I feel it in being more aware of my surroundings and of the life I am choosing to create for myself, and the difference I am making in the world.

So tell me, was there a moment or period of time when you really starting becoming an adult, or felt grown-up?

This pone takes the cake.

Well, clearly I failed at the previous mission.  This is my way of making it up to all of you. Yes, by kicking your pony-tailed butts .

Leah

(Erica, can this be my bridesmaid hair? No? Okay then, Micaela?)

(Props to Tim for being such a good sport.)
