The World is Amazing

Written by Kate. Filed Under animals, pigs

I was forwarded this email while at work. It is especially fitting because we are pig farmers!

We have since found out that the story associated with these pictures isn’t true…you can find out the true story on Snopes.

Enjoy the pictures anyway!

“In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother’s cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans’ that could be found quickly, were a litter of weanling pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops? Take a look…you won’t believe your eyes!!”

So cute, right?! Oh if only I had a tiger..

I went to the barn last night to visit the baby pigs. But they were all sleeping and then I woke up the mommy pigs and they started being all possessive like I was going to steal their piglets. Imagine it was a tiger instead? I’d be attacked in an instant!

I don’t know what’s cuter. The tiger taking care of the piglets, or the piglets dressed up as tigers lol

  10. Selene on January 26th, 2008 9:05 pm

Wow, that is so cute. At first when I saw the pictures I was sure the tiger was going to eat the pigs. Than I read the story and was amazed at the small miracles in this world.

  11. Connie on January 27th, 2008 12:26 am

This is one of the best things I’ve read today! Thanks for sharing it. The photos of those piglets on top of the Tiger is priceless.

  12. n8 on January 27th, 2008 2:09 pm

Great article and site by the way for that matter. I had to take a 2nd look I thought the pigs were photoshopped.

    Tigers need love to.

  13. Steve on January 28th, 2008 3:47 pm

Great article. I don’t know what’s more amazing. That the tiger accepted the pigs or that the pigs put up with the tiger skin. Lol.

Brings a whole new meaning to “pigs in a blanket”.

  14. Kevin on January 28th, 2008 6:09 pm

Wow, this is an amazing piece. That isn’t photoshoped? That was my first question because it is just so surreal. Great article, thanks for sharing !

  23. Jackie on February 15th, 2008 6:04 am

This isn’t a true story. It is actually really disturbing. Thumbs down:

The images displayed above were taken in 2004 at the Sriracha Tiger Zoo in Chonburi, Thailand. Although the Sriracha Tiger Zoo hosts one of the world’s most successful tiger breeding programs, unlike most western zoos it also offers circus- and carnival-like shows, exhibits, and interactions, including (as evidenced here) the mixture of adults and young of quite different species in the same enclosures. As described by the AWI Quarterly, a publication of the Animal Welfare Institute:

The Sriracha Tiger Zoo, an hour outside of Bangkok, Thailand, is truly an amazing place. Boasting more than 400 tigers, a handful of Asian elephants, piles of crocodiles, camels, snakes and other exotic animals, the zoo has some intriguing, yet troubling exhibits.

In one glass room, a farrowing crate entombed a pig who, lying on her side, nourished both her piglets and tiger cubs. Across the hall, another glass room housed a female tiger, who fed piglets adorned in tiger-print costumes. This incongruous display was replicated elsewhere, where enclosures housed tigers, pigs, and dogs together.

In another area, a visitor could feed milk to a young tiger resting on his or her lap — a young tiger still in possession of his claws … There was a tiger circus, not dissimilar from a circus anywhere else: tigers leaping through rings of fire, walking across a double tightrope, parading around the ring on hind legs, and riding around on the back of the horse.

  24. Origena on February 15th, 2008 12:13 pm

It’s not sweet, it’s saddening because “The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin” -> if it’s a real tiger skin, then it’s very saddening and cruel.
Even if the tiger skin was taken from a dead tiger, still…., imagine to see human skin is used to wrap something. It’s truly horrible and unthinkable.
I hope it’s just a fake skin tiger, and I hope that horrible zoo is closed forever :)

  25. Kate on February 15th, 2008 2:17 pm

Regardless of the facts I think that the photos are totally cute and because we are pig farmers I thought it was fitting for the blog. If you don’t like it the skip this post!

  26. Qly on February 15th, 2008 5:05 pm

Hey Rhett stop calling people a retard when your comment itself is ill-informed, you said you checked on snopes, well then surely you read the big red “Real photos; inaccurate description” right?
This may or may not have been on the news (it’s not like only absolute truth ever goes into them anyways) but the bottomline is: these pictures are not photoshopped…
Also, i don’t see how this tigger here is different form the one in the story above, hell, it’s still feeding f***ing pigglets!

  27. Debra on February 17th, 2008 12:40 am

Origena, are you against organ harvesting too? Once something is dead, I think it’s good to be able to continue to make it useful if possible, and if using the skin form a dead tiger helped save a live one, what harm is there? Many mothers pine away and day after losing their babies- it’s far from unheard of.

The same thing is sometimes done with lambs and kids if a mother loses her baby or babies, and there is one rejected by its own mother, tying the skin of the dead baby onto it will often trick the pining mother into thinking it’s her own baby and everyone ends up happy and healthy.

Very cute story with them little piggies though!

  28. Wolfie Rankin on February 17th, 2008 12:57 am

It’s not cute, the snopes version of the story is correct. that zoo apparently treats it’s animals very poorly and only does this to amuse visitors and reap the cash benefits.

omg, this is the cutest most amazing thing i have ever seen! It makes you wonder who the real animals on this planet are?? If a Tiger and piglets can get along and be a family, why can’t humans of different races and countries do the same….

jesus a tiger can accept piglets as her babies, and you people cant stop snapping on each other and calling each other names?? who cares if it’s real or photoshopped?? debra had the best comment, and i thank you for it, all in all it’s very cute and amusing, why does someone feel it’s cruel and a money making scam?? those animals do not look like they are being treated cruely at all, they look content and well fed, they look fine esp. for being in a zoo, jesus lighten up already,

  36. Sheila on February 22nd, 2008 4:58 am

Lovely pictures, just sorry I read further. It seems a lot of mixed up humans are producing a lot of mixed up animals here.

  37. joe on February 22nd, 2008 1:06 pm

yeah this is really cool stuff, who ever though that a tiger would do such a thing. anyways its just a matter of time before she realizes this and eats tem all up!

  38. Adrienne on February 22nd, 2008 6:18 pm

this is a true story, and i don’t think it was cruel that they used the DEAD tiger cubs skin at all. they did so to save the mother tiger’s sanity, she knew she had cubs, and would have been in terrible grief, damaging her own health. By providing piglets, that smelled like her young, thanks to the skins, she can use her maternal instincts, and not be confused. This helped the RARE tiger stay healthy and sane

@Debra: No I’m not against it at all, and I never infer that in my comment ;)
I’m not against this post at all either, I’m sorry if my previous comment is translated that way.

The photo is indeed cute, if only the story is true. But instead the story, like mentioned @Jackie comment here is very sad.

That Zoo (con Circus) was even closed once because of many tigers were dead there, and there’s also an allegedly saying that the Zoo, The Sriracha Tiger Zoo, was/is selling tiger meats to China.

    Old Joke:

A farmer had a three legged pig and brought him to the state fair.

A reporter wandered by and asked “Why Does your pig have just three legs?”

The farmer said, “This is the most amazing pig. Our house caught fire and pig rushed into the house and saved all of our lives!”

Reporter: “That is great. But why Does your Pig have just three legs?”

Farmer: “Then another day the pig jumped into a lake to save my drowning daughter!

Reporter: “Again, that is great! But why Does your Pig have just three legs?”

Farmer: “Well hime being so great and all, we can’t eat him all at once!”
