My little baby girl is a soother snob.
Babies often need to suck to soothe themselves, and because I’m obviously not going to feed Hailey 24/7, we really want her to take a soother. So far she’s a total snob and will not take any.
We’ve tried:
Avent

Nuk

Born Free

Playtex Binky

Evenflo Mimi Neo Pacifier

She’s only sort of taken one, the Playtex Binky. We are going to keep trying it so hopefully someday she will take it. Here’s a photo from just about the only time she took it:
She prefers this:
And it can get pretty annoying very fast to sit around with a baby sucking on your finger.
Anyone else have a baby that doesn’t like soothers? Which worked for you?

Is that what Canadians call those things? Soothers? I have never heard that before! Kinda like it. We (in America, or at least Michigan) call them pacifiers, and we (my family) call it either a paci or pipe. Another favorite is bink or binky, which I hate.

I didn’t realize that soothers had so many names (or that it was a Canadian thing to call it a soother.)
you know my harry loves himself a good soother so i can’t weigh in on this one, but just wanted to say that pic is adorable!!
Have you tried Playtex Ortho-Pro ??
those are the only ones that Liam would take, and the only ones a friend of mine’s baby would take too..
We havn’t tried that yet. We are mostly looking for soothers with the same shape as my finger at this point-that’s why we went with the Playtex Binky
My 2 girls were so picky with their soothers and wierdly enought they both only like the laytex non angeled ones
these 2 are the only ones they both liked

HTH:)
Kate my friend Della’s baby was a real soother snob too. She found that the only one he would take was one that they sell at Toys R Us called MAM. He goes crazy for MAM soothers still and he’s almost 2. Best of luck!!! P.S. She’s soooo cute!!

Thanks for the suggestion Krin! We might have to give it a try.
I don’t know much about formula fed babies, but for a breastfed baby, they rarely take soothers. They want the real thing most of the time. For the first 6 weeks of my baby’s life all I did was breastfeed. You can’t over breastfeed and its great for milk production. And its free!
That being said, I did perservere and train Neve to take a soother, but she was about 4months old before I got to that point. She is turning 1 next week and still breastfeeds and takes a soother. We found success with Avent.
I loved to just sit down, relax, and enjoy some time with my baby and let her feed. Its completely natural at this age, and it is such an amazing bonding experience. Even now, I still spend Neve’s nap with her asleep on my breast, on the couch with the breastfeeding pillow. I catch up on reading and she sleeps. You never get these moments back.
If you are formula feeding you will find all of this to be completely crazy. Lol! That’s okay too.
Good luck! Your baby is beautiful!
My brother’s twins, which are 6 months old right now, both don’t take soothers. They suck like mad on their own hands though. I find it soothes them to hold them straight up against your chest and their head resting on your shoulder. Works everytime and they even fall asleep like that often.
Good luck!
Hailey will suck on her hand, when she can find it that is. She soothes when I hold her up, but that’s only if she is calm in the first place.
I can’t weigh in on this issue (except that – I got your baby a soother that isn’t pictured here! Maybe you should try it… perhaps raspbabies only like raspberry soothers.), but I can give your fingers a break on Saturday for a while!
The soother you got Hailey is more of a teether soother. I will try that when she starts teething- hopefully she takes that!
ONE MORE WEEK!!!!
PS I’m glad you didn’t put a picture of your boob on the blog. That would have been awkward.

I’ve never heard it called a “soother” before, but I like that name so much better than pacifier or, what my brother used to call it, “nin-nin.”

dad’s bicep. my little lady was quite soothed right from ‘go’ until about 4 months by smootching my arm whilst i held her in ‘football’ hold.

It looks like all those are silicone which is a little harder. I don’t know if you have tried the latex but my kiddos did the best with those. They are a lot softer and maybe that will help her. We have always used the Nuk latex pacifiers. Good luck!

Our daughter and son never took a soother and both preferred our fingers to suck until at about 11 weeks they were able to start sucking their own fingers. Sigh. My daughter is almost 5 and still sucks her fingers

When my son was younger (he’s since weened himself when he was recently sick), the only pacifiers he would use was the Soothie by The First Years (http://www.learningcurve.com/product/detail/Y4375A2?locale=en_US). He used it and loved it, after we had gone through tons of different brands and types. Hopefully that might help
In Australia we call them dummies. I have no ideas why…perhaps because it is a fake nipple. My babies (I have had 3) all refused them because they were latex and the taste was nasty. So I have been absolutely no help. All I can suggest is to persevere
Daniel will sometime take a Nuby soother, or Life brand, they are the same ones. He really prefers his thumb. I have also heard good things about soothies, they seem to be shaped like a bottle nipple.
Good luck
