Separation anxiety

in Calgary, Opinionated

Today I was reading my morning paper, when I noticed a poll done by the “24 Hours” free daily newspaper (one of the many free papers I grab whenever I can) and the Calgary Sun. It asked Albertans:

”Should Alberta consider separation from Canada in the wake of the parliamentary crisis?”

The response? A whopping 66% voted yes.The funny part is, Alberta is a very conservative province, so they voted Harper into the Prime Ministerial position and now want to separate from their country because of him (and the Opposition of course). I’m sure there are other reasons, such as oil and gas, that are pushing this willingness to separate, but my lord seeing that was a shocker to me this morning! Wasn’t Quebec like 0.5% away from separation during their big French Sovereignty Movement? Don’t quote me on that, but I do remember it being scarily close. I would really like to see the statistics on the people who took part in this poll; which kind of Calgarians are the ones who wish to separate. If Alberta did separate, I would not only be three provinces away from the rest of the blondes, but two provinces and a country away. I like it when politics goes crazy, it does get people impassioned and starting to think in new ways, but I think this is taking things a step too far.

Watch out, Parti Quebecois, looks like the Alberta Party will be pushing for independence and we got waaay more money than you. And oil. And a lot of rednecks. With guns. Sound familiar?

Hm… if you separated I’d get a cool stamp in my passport when I visited you. It’s empty right now. Sad.

I did a gr. 8 history lesson on separatism in Quebec this week.

i was just saying during the whole shebang this past week that we were asking for canadian politics to get at least a tad more exciting like the u.s. I guess this is as exciting as it gets for us! lol.

I have long suspected that Mr. Stelmach’s
unexpectedly huge victory was, in large part, the result of a lot of Albertans ‘parking’ their vote. I believe many people voted Conservative with one eye turned toward Ottawa. I very much sense that Albertans seem to be giving the federal government one last chance. Both Layton and Dion have proposed policies that would be devastating for this province and, by electing a host of ’separatist-light’ politicians, Albertans feel that if the feds turn to a Trudeauesque policy of loot and pillage of the western economy, they can count on many of the elected Conservatives to jump ship and swing their support to the Alberta Party. This will give Alberta a head start at getting a separatist machine up and running very quickly.
It may only be wishful thinking on my part, but I suspect that if the federal politicians pull one more bone-headed stunt…as this coalition would have been…that threatens Alberta, there may be a quick exit from Confederation in the works for this province.

I am officially out of touch with world news. The US has so many of our own problems right now it is totally over shadowing the rest of the world. What is going on in Parliament that is so bad it has people talking about succession?

Sometimes I kind of wish we could take a saw to the borders and float some of these provinces our to sea. Seriously…so not interested in ANOTHER election. Separation would be lame…Prime Minister Stelmach? Yeah. No.
