Baseball how we love you!

Micaela, Lauren and I all play on the same ball team..
Ball

I am a pitcher, Lauren is our amazing first base player and Mic is our fast running outfielder!

Our team plays in the ladies league in our town, we are 1 of 6 teams. We are the newest and the youngest of all the other teams. We started playing together last year, so we’re slowly getting used to playing with each other and just having a blast (Our shirts say “Girls just wanna have fun!”…in pink). For some people on our team it’s their first time playing baseball, we weren’t out to win, just have a good time.

Anyways we have played many games this summer, you can see us playing every Wednesday night, since May. But we had not won any games in all of our 2 years, that is until tonight! And when it counts too! You see all of our games until last Wednesdays were just practice games, getting us all warmed up. Now we are into our play-offs. Last week we lost (surprise, surprise, against the best time mind you), but this week we pulled out all our skills. Mad ball hitting, sweet pitching (if I do say so myself), great plays and lots and lots of cheering! We were playing against the 2nd or 3rd best team in the league.

It was funny because we actually didn’t think that we won, we were home team (meaning we get last bat) and were ready to go out and try to get the 1 run we needed to win when the other team said but you don’t need to hit if you are winning! So we re-counted and realized that we won!

You better believe we all went crazy and jumped into a large team hug. I think the other team was a bit mad at our crazy cheering, but I think they should have been happy for us, it was our first win! Now we actually have a chance of getting in the play-offs. Wish us luck!

(How many times did I say “we” in that post. holy I need a new writing style)

As I’m sure all of you are aware, the Olympics in Beijing begin tomorrow and run from August 8 -24. I love when the Olympics are on because there’s always something to watch on tv and lots of people to cheer for. There are so many sports I don’t think I could pick my favourite, but I always love watching the gymnastics, swimming, rowing, softball, baseball and triathlon events. (And for Winter games the whole family are big skiing and snowboarding fans. Did you know the winter Olympics will be held in Canada in 2010? Too bad Vancouver is across the country from us, but close to Leah, although hopefully she won’t be there then.. hint hint.)

And now for the point of this blog. I found a blog written by a Dutch (Canadian) pitcher on the Dutch Olympic team. “Canadutch Olympic baseball experience 2008” His name is Leon and he is writing about his experience at the Olympics! It’s a great idea for a blog, and makes me want to cheer them on so I can feel like I’m part of the action, reading about his games and his experience at the Olympics. They were training in Korea for a while before the games and now have arrived in Beijing, living in the huge Olympic village.

And now time for my random story. My mom’s cousin is dating a man who’s son is carrying the Canadian flag in the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics!  Adam Van Koeverden (a strong Dutch name, I might add) is a kayaker going for the gold! We’ll be following the Canadian Olympic hopefuls on cbc.ca

Who will you be cheering for?
