Happy Canada Day!

Canada is 143 years old today!

No fireworks for us this year, but we did go to a firemans/Canada Day breakfast.

Hailey celebrated by wearing her Canada sweater and being really good at sitting up! Check out her new skill.
Look whos sitting up!
hi!

It's the baby's birthday!

It’s June 9th, do you know what that means? Our baby is one year older! We sure do love our Lauren. Laurence, laureenni fetuccini, laulau, laur, whatever we call her.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to tell you all what we love about our baby.

I love Lauren’s creativity and beauty. Lauren will show up at a party wearing an amazing skirt, or a gorgeous tank top, and upon asking her where she got it, she will respond “Oh, I made it” like it is no big deal. She is such a talented designer and creator – I hope we will be seeing some of her creations on this blog soon!

Lauren is also an incredibly beautiful girl. She has this gorgeous long blonde hair, and her eyes are so blue they are almost silver, and practically see-through. She is a pretty young woman :) (And I hope she comes to visit me over Stampede :P )

Lauren may be ‘the baby’ in terms of age, but you’d better believe the rest of us would have a hard time keeping up with her when it comes to her athletic ability. She’s been a ski racing champ, hard-core cheerleader, and just this past Sunday she ran a 5 km race…which I don’t think she trained for. She can play a decent game of golf with ease…heck, any sport really!

Dear Lowen,
I always wish you were with me when I am shopping because I always feel like I could use your advice! I love that photo of us from my wedding, it might be my favourite wedding photo (don’t tell Kent!) I love that I always know where to find you on weekend afternoons (laying on the couch watching some movie that we haven’t seen since we were kids.) And lastly, I love that you are the sister with the sense of humour closest to mine, meaning that you always know how to make me laugh.

Have a happy JUNE 9!

Love,

Micaela

Happy Birthday Mom!!

Today mom turns 50 years old! We had a joint party for mom and dad earlier this month, dad turned 50 last year and now mom this year.  We had a really fun fashion show at the party full of clothes that mom made us over the years.  Photos to come of that later! For now here’s a 4 generations photo from when Hailey was 1 week old. Hailey, me, mom and Oma

My Birthday Party Crasher

After having been living in Calgary (across the country from the rest of my famjam) for a year and a half now, I have been blessed with tons of visitors. And there is nothing I love more than visitors (hint, hint!). At one point, when two groups of visitors overlapped, there were seven (SEVEN!) extra people sleeping in my one-bedroom condo. It was a snuggly night, to say the least.

A certain person, my mother, hadn’t been out to see me at all and was feeling kind of bad about it. I assured her not to worry, she had a lot going on in her own life and that there would never, ever be hard feelings for not coming out to see me. And I truly, honestly meant it.

As many of you know, it was my birthday this past week.  My aunt had asked if she could take me to lunch and of course I wanted to. I got there first, and when she got there she sat down, we made a small talk and she just so happened to see someone she knew, who she ran over and gave a big hug to. “Funny,” I thought to myself. “The restaurant is dead, what a small world that she would see someone she knew.” The hug finished, and as my aunt turned around, there stood …

MY MOM!!!!

“Mom?” I sputtered as I stared at her, not sure if it was real or not. “What are you doing here?” Well, she came to crash my birthday party! That is the most dedicated party guest I had ever seen. We had an amazing visit, although I spent the day in Canmore after my birthday party in a fairly crapulous state.

We had an amazing, relaxing visit and I am SO GLAD she came!

Me & Mom

I had an amazing birthday party that was everything I wanted it to be and more. Thanks to the help of these girls!

Les fillesCousin Em, Nat, Me & Mich

My cousin Em is just kind of awesome, Nat is the one who wrote this post and Mich blogs here. She organized a meet-up in July and we have stayed friends because she is so wonderful. True story. Nat is even trying to steal her away from me. (I can’t blame her, I’d probably do the same.)

For those of you who asked about my birthday shoes, they came, and were too big for me :( I’ll still post a picture soon.

And my top is from H&M, since I know at least one person will be asking!

Happy Birthday Leah!

Sisters

Leahpicnik

It’s November the last, and we all know what that means- it’s Leah’s birthday! Mom surprised Leah in Calgary on Saturday at lunch, and is staying there until Tuesday, and we all wish we could be there with her! So happy birthday to the most awesome sister, who we all miss and wish we could be with! Here are a few pictures of Leah throughout the years,

PS.  BIG NEWS everybody! We have decided to extend this NoBloPoMo into December! So be prepared for more baby news (eek!), decorating posts, and (hopefully not bad) roommate posts!  There won’t be any birthday posts like this one unfortunately though…because the next birthday is Dad’s on May 4.

Happy Birthday!

What I can't live without.

As per the 20sbblog carnival, and with it being my turn to blog for NaBloPoMo, I introduce to you not just a thing that I can’t live without, but a person.

Coincidentally, this person is also having her 22nd birthday today! This is Stef, who has been my best friend since I was three.

Stef

When we were children, Stef and I lived 10 minutes apart. We would play dress up (she had the most awesome dress up clothes), we would go to each other’s school dances,  we would play Nintendo 64, and would always go camping every summer with our families (our Mom’s also happened to be best friends).

We would tie bars of soap to our feet with elastics and jump on her trampoline with the sprinkler on underneath.

When we got older, Stef’s Mom moved their family away from the farm and to our nations capital to further her career, so started the family road trips to Ottawa.

I couldn’t live without her so far away, and I was so happy when she came to the same University as me.

Then I moved to Calgary, and can you believe that I didn’t see Stef for 14 months? She got an internship that brought her to Calgary (did I mention how absolutely brilliant and sought after this girl is?) and we got to be inseparable again for a few weeks.

leah and stef

I love this girl, this magificent woman who is there for me in joy and when  I just need to cry.

Happy Birthday Stef!

I just can’t live without her.

Erica's Birthday!

We are such horrible sisters! We missed announcing Erica’s birthday yesterday!

Happy Belated Birthday Erica!! Thank you for all the amazing work you do for our blog!

Sisterly connections and unbirthdays.

Thing number one:

While the premise of our blog is us as sisters, I’ve noticed that we write about our individual lives, which naturally include each other as our lives intersect and we see each other often, but never about our relationships with each other specifically. I imagine that people might find it hard to believe that we are actually friends and don’t all secretly dislike each other, because I’m sure I’d be thinking the same thing - five girls? How can they actually all get along?

Well, as any sister to a sister knows well, the sister connection goes much deeper than things like “getting along.” We do, and we don’t, and then we forget that we ever didn’t.

Sometimes, there are moments that make me appreciate the sister connection that much more, and this is one of them:

Leah was visiting Toronto today, and while I was at work she texted me saying:

“I am at the one size fits all store!” (this is a clothing store I was telling her about last week, saying nothing about it except everything in it was one size.)

I texted back: “There was only one thing I really liked there, a shirt with a big flower on the front.”

Leah shows up at my door wearing the shirt she bought, before I texted her saying that I liked it:

Yes, we can go shopping in the biggest city in Canada, wind up in the same store, and fall in love with the same shirt. If that isn’t a sisterly connection, well then I don’t know what is!

Thing number two:

I walked into my living room after work today (while giving Leah a tour) to see this:

I actually had to read the card that came with it in order to remember what the occasion was – turns out, it’s my unbirthday!

The summer Kent and I started dating, we worked at a camp and I wrote down my birthdate wrong on some form at some point- I wrote 08/11 instead of 11/08. So on August 11, everyone at the camp was wishing me a happy birthday and I was so confused!  Kent even had the camp baker bake me a little cake and gave it to me, after which I had to explain to him that it wasn’t my birthday at all.

You can’t really tell from this picture of a picture, but it was actually a little four layer cake. Impressive!:

Funnily enough, all summer long we had been randomly singing the song from Alice in Wonderland: “A very merry unbirthday, to you, to you… etc.” So we were excited to actually be able to sing the song in context after determining that it must be my unbirthday.

Good job Kent, for remembering this little holiday.

And, the best part of the present? A little pre-emptive, but adorable nonetheless:
