Toronto LG Fashion Week – Rachel Mara

Last spring you might remember that the five blondes got an invitation to a Toronto Fashion Week show which Lauren and I attended. Well this fall we got two invitations (that’s right, the five blondes are slowly moving up in the world!) and Leah and I got to attend the Rachel Mara show.

Leah looked super cute, as always:

I looked super pregnant, as always:

When we arrived we had fun in the fancy lobby trying to visit as many of the booths as we could.

We had our caricatures done. I don’t have a picture of them (they were really good though!), buuut here’s me in front of someone getting theirs done:

We posed with a real life Kent doll – I changed mine and Kent’s desktop background to my Ken picture that evening as a joke. He told me: “no more beaus are allowed to touch our baby!”:

We even posed on a red carpet:

The Rachel Mara show was amazing! It was ridiculously full – people had to sit in the aisles, and I could see why – Leah and I loved almost every outfit. Here are a few of them. Gorgeous, no? You can check out Rachel’s entire collection here or in person at Holt Renfrew.

For The World I Walk On

If I told you I was really excited about my new Cougar boots, you might wonder if I got a job as a construction worker. Remember these?

Yea, not so sexy.

However, I’m about to blow your mind. Cougar has recently gone through a major rebranding and is now producing boots that are both warm and stylish. A blend of practical and cute is definitely welcome, as the winter is approaching and it is going to get c-c-cold. Recently, Cougar sent me a few pairs to test out and I am looking forward to putting them to the test. Here is a sneak preview of what is soon to come.

Honestly, could rain boots come any cuter than this?

Not only are they cute and waterproof, they are also fleece-lined and are going to keep my toes toasty warm this winter. I am so excited to put them to use and take some outfit photos. And there’s more boots to come!

The Leggings/Jeggings Debate

As of right now, the only jeans I own (that fit me..) are skinny jeans/jeggings that just happened to be on sale.  This morning I wasn’t feeling very well, so I didn’t want to wear jeans, and my lulus were in the laundry basket, so I wore leggings.  These aren’t “stylish” leggings at all.  In fact I think they might be old maternity leggings that I found in our house and adopted.  Either way, they are super comfy.  I know some people use the rule that it is okay to wear leggings as long as you wear a shirt that covers your lady parts/bum, but I’m not sure that I’m even following that rule today:

It’s a longish shirt, and a long sweater in the back, but mostly when I’m sitting cross legged at school on a comfy bench it doesn’t come down all the way.

I do have an issue with people dissing ‘leggings-as-pants’, but who are okay with jeggings/skinny jeans, or vise versa.  When I was home for Thanksgiving weekend I brought 2 pairs of jeans, and my leggings. I guess one of the pairs of jeans would be considered jeggings. We go to church with my dad’s side of the family, and live next door to our Oma, so we were going to spend Sunday afternoon with them as well.  Sunday morning I wore leggings with a long shirt to church.  These are the same tights as the picture above.  Before dinner I changed into my jeggings. I think I got about 3 comments about how tight my jeans were.  I really don’t understand this.  I was wearing tights earlier, which are just as tight, if not tighter than my jeans, so how is this different?

What are some fashion “rules” that you live/dress by?

Have you ever been criticized for what you were wearing?

Closet Thinking

I read a post on YoungHouseLove recently that got me thinking about my closet.  Do I really love all the clothes I own? Is everything necessary? Right away I know my answer is no.  I have so many clothes, but some of them are over 4 years old, getting worn and look like bla on me, but I keep them because ‘what if one day I want to wear it?’.  Scott is really bad for this as well. He has a chest of clothes in our room of which he has touched maybe 4 things.  We must be closet horders. haha get it?

Two points in YoungHouseLove‘s post stayed with me, and I think I’ll use this for my closet cleaning/new clothes buying:

  • Ask yourself if each item of clothing in your closet: 1) flatters your shape, 2) fits perfectly or is fixable, 3) is the right color for you, 4) has been worn in the last two years – only things that get four yesses should stay.”
  • Don’t buy anything on sale that you wouldn’t consider at full price.

I think I’m going to challenge myself to keep a tally of what I wear and in a couple weeks get rid of everything I don’t love.  I really like the idea of consigning clothes, that still have a lot of wear left in them, but are just not right for me. That way I can use the money that I get to put towards items that I will actually wear. I think Mic and Leah know of a store in Toronto, any London readers know of one here? I know Once Upon A Child buys children’s clothing but I’m looking for women’s consignment.

Goodbye ugly clothes

I’m looking forward to seeing my newly cleaned closet once this is all over! I’m going to challenge Scott to try and do this as well. He has shirts from highschool that he keeps “just in case” of what? Just incase all your others clothes are eaten by bugs?

I’m thinking some clothes might get exemptions.. but we’ll see as I go through, maybe my attitude will change.

Anyone else ever tried this?

a post isn’t a post from me, without a photo of Hailey:
Big girl

The cutest baby bump since … well, Kate's!

Micaela and Kate had an impromptu baby bump photo shoot at a wedding on Saturday, and since the results are so gorgeous I just had to share it with you.

Doesn’t she look amazing? She’s halfway along now, so not much more to go!

The dress was not even a maternity dress, but thanks to the ‘panel’ of fabric along the front of it, Mic was able to sneakily hide her belly. Here she is with our parents, see? no baby bump!

She found the dress at our favourite consignment store in Toronto, Repeat Boutique.

How many times can I say 'sequins' in on blog post?

Is it weird that I am incredibly attracted to these pants? I can’t even take my eyes off of them (it might be the glare…).

J. Crew

Not so nice? The price tag of $650. According to my sources (ahem, Cupcakes and Cashmere), sequins mixed with rugged clothing, heavy boots, and knits is ‘in’ for this upcoming Fall season. More specifically, sequin pants, shorts & skirts. I’m not sure I am brave enough to boast a pair of sequin pants on my chicken legs, but I have a serious affinity towards sequins and I am hoping that a sequin skirt will make its way into my closet this Fall.

What’s your opinion – are those sequin pants awesome or do they belong only in the circus? Will you be pasting sequins all over your body this Autumn?

Birthday, birthday, almost famous.

You may not realize it, but it’a a big day in Fiveblondeland. It is our Erica’s birthday – she is 28 years old today! Holy moly, I can’t believe my oldest sister is almost 30. Not to rub it in or anything, Sceri…

This beautiful photo was taken on her wedding day.

Also – I should note that it was Mrs. Kate’s birthday on the 31st of July and her terrible sisters neglected to inform all of you about it. So happy belated birthday Katers, mother of the most beautiful girl in the entire universe. Kate’s birthday used to be my favourite holiday of the entire year as it was the one day that Kate would just let loose, take back one too many tequila shots and let me tell you, this girl is an absolute blast when she is ready to part-ay.

An homage to that side of Kate:

Did you know that our Mom has a blog too? And that she is a world class seamstress? And that our local paper just wrote an article about her? She is quickly surpassing her daughters in cool-ness. Check out the article entitled “Online Passion for Fashion”. We’re proud of you, Mommio!

Spoiling myself

I have changed so much over the past year, physically and mentally.

I went from this (7 weeks pregnant)

to this (37 weeks pregnant)

and now I’m back to this after 6 months (27 weeks without baby)

At Michelle & Jeff's Wedding

Nothing fits right at all, somehow I managed to lose all my baby weight, and some.  So finally after months of complaining about having nothing to wear, my birthday arrived  (July 31, thanks for posting Happy Birthday, sisters… NOT)  mom took me clothes shopping! I’m still exhausted just thinking about it.  It took 4 people, a baby and a few sales people  to find clothes that would suit my new body.  I’m happy to report that I found lots that I like and am excited to wear.

I ended up with skinny jeans (! yikes, my first pair), a romper (who the heck do I think I am? Can I even pull off a romper??), a dress, skirt, capris and 6 shirts.  Here’s a sampling of my new wardrobe. It seems my colours are gray and maroon/pinkish along with jean.

New wardrobe shopping is so fun but expensive.  My go to stores have not changed- Smart Set, Rw&Co, American Eagle and this time I happened to find something that I liked and at a reasonable price at Mexx.

What are your go to stores?

The ONLY bad thing about summer (if it ever arrives…)

That’s right women (and I’m sure you men too), you know what I’m talking about.

BIKINI. SHOPPING.

Maybe for some of you this time passed awhile ago, but I live in Calgary and summertime seems to have forgotten about us this year. Even just the words make me shudder. The thought of standing in the change room, with your underwear uncomfortably on underneath the overpriced bottoms, the horrible lighting (what IS it with the lighting in those dank change rooms anyways!?), the judgemental eyes of the salespeople, the pasty skin from a winter of -40c weather, ugh. The list goes on.

This year I *think* I have found a way around the process. I fell in love with a Mark bikini a few months ago but because I live in Canada was unable to order it online (grr…). Luckily, I found an Avon salesperson through the retirement home I work at and today it arrived!

Source: Mark. website

I’m at my coffee shop right now waiting for an appointment with my doctor, and it’s currently burning a hole in my purse waiting to be tried on … let’s hope my method of buying the bathing suit online and avoiding those degrading bathing suit store change rooms works. I’ll keep you updated! Mark has tons of cute, affordable stuff on their website and if the bathing suit goes over well I would definitely order more. I’ve got my eyes on a few other things on the website.

So dearest Mother Nature, I’ve got the bikini now how about you SEND ME SOME HOT WEATHER. Please. And thank you.
