One Month

Leaving the hospital

Leaving the hospital

Hailey is one month old, where did the time go. So much has changed in the past month, it’s hard to imagine my life before baby Hailey. Many emotions have been experienced, some positive and some negative but I’d have to say the positive outweigh the negative by far.

Before Hailey was born I had not held very many babies, now it feels so natural.  It’s amazing how quickly you can get used to incorporating a new life into your life.

I love everything about her. Her cute nose, ears, lips, fingers (which are getting chubby), her big feet (yes she takes after mama), and well just everything!

I haven’t posted much about life with a baby, I guess I’ve been preoccupied.

My day goes a little something like this.

  • 2:30 or 3am Pry myself from bed, feed Hailey and put her back to sleep
  • 6:30 or 7am Feed Hailey again entertain her for a bit and then back to sleep we go.
  • 10am Feed Hailey
  • 10:45am Play a bit until she gets sleepy and I put her down for a nap (which is challenging at times).

I won’t write out the rest of the day because it is very repetitive but I feed her every 3 hours (which takes about 45 min), we have some activity time and then Hailey naps while I get stuff done around the house, do some of the never ending laundry (this girl can easily go through 4 burp clothes in 1 day! She’s a spit up queen), or try to convince myself to take a nap. It’s fairly exhausting and Scott and I normally end up crashing on the couch at 9pm feeling exhausted (with one more 10pm feeding to go after that).

And just when I tell Scott that I think I’ve gotten the hang of this baby thing, Hailey goes and throws a loop in our day- She has her first cold. She started getting congested on Saturday and wouldn’t you know it, by Saturday night she was sneezing and coughing like crazy. She woke us up every 2 hours on Saturday with her coughing, making me feel so devastated for her. I think we’ve finally gotten over the worst of the cold, it certainly has not been fun.  It’s also really thrown off her schedule making life a little unpredictable right now.

I know she’s grown a lot in this past month (at birth she was 7lbs 15oz and on last Wednesday Feb 17 she was at 9lbs 10oz-she’s probably at a 2 lb weight gain now) but I don’t really notice it that much, probably because I’m with her every moment of her life.  She still fits into her (borrowed, thanks Harry!) newborn clothes but they are almost reaching their stretching max point. She’s still not broad enough in the shoulders for her 0-3 onesies so they look large on her but I still put her in them, just because she looks so darn cute.

As for my recovery over the past month I seem to have bounced back pretty well. I have about 7lbs on top of my pre-pregnancy weight (I ended up gaining just over 30 lbs), but I fit back into all my clothes already so I think most of that weight lies in the chest region. I have a lot of back pain so I plan to book a massage with my favourite massage therapist when she gets back from her wedding!

Over the month I thought of many things I would write in her 1 month post, but surprise surprise I have mommy brain and can’t remember what I had planned. So I’ll leave it at that, and will add a few more photos for your viewing pleasure.

Hailey's birth

This story turned out a lot more wordy then I thought it would be. Here’s a quick version, click below the cut for the long descriptive one.

Saturday January 23rd 2010

times are approximate, towards the end of the labour times are fuzzy.

3:00AM- Kate wakes up feeling contractions! They are 5 min apart but only about 20-30 seconds long.

7:00AM- Scott wakes up and learns that Kate has been having contractions and doesn’t know quite what to think.

9:15AM- Scott & Kate drive to the pig barn. Scott goes in the barn and Kate breathes through her contractions in the truck .

11:30AM- Kate straightens her hair to be pretty for the baby (and for photos)

12:00PM- Scott & Kate decide to head to the hospital. It’s been 9 hours and the contractions are still 5 min apart.

12:30PM- Walk up to triage at the hospital and get put into a labour room. Kate thinks nurse does not believe that she is actually in labour.

1:00PM- Kate gets hooked up to a monitor to track baby’s heart rate and the strength of the contractions.

1:45PM- Nurse checks Kate and she is 5 cm! Wooo Raspbaby is on her way!

3:15PM- Kate decides contractions are starting to hurt too much to cope and asks for epidural.

3:30PM- The IV gets put in Kate’s arm- Kate starts shaking horribly and can not stop.

3:45PM- The anesthesiologist finally arrives and Kate get’s an epidural. Her legs start to fall asleep and contractions pain peters out -a great feeling.

4:00PM- Kate gets wheeled to delivery room.

4:15PM- Kate gets an in-out catheter (ewww) and they check her progress- she is at an 8! Because her water has not broken they call for the resident doctor to come and break her water.

5:30PM- Nurse goes on break- get a replacement and she decides to give Kate’s epidural a top-up because she is starting to feel really bad pains in her lower belly.

6:15PM- Resident doctor finally comes and breaks Kate’s water. She is announced to be at a 9.

6:30PM- Kate get’s another in-out catheter (ewww) because bladder is blocking baby. This worked -baby moves even farther down and Raspbaby will be born soon.

6:50PM- Kate starts pushing

7:10PM- Hailey is born!

Hailey 031

First of all Thank You for all the wonderful messages that were left on the “It’s a Girl!” post. We ended up staying another night at the hospital and came home yesterday at lunch.  We had a difficult and long first night, but so far today is going much better. I’m hoping Hailey will let Scott and me get some sleep tonight.

I should tell you quickly about our name choice!  Scott has always had a favourite girls name and I always had a favourite boys name, so we knew quickly that those would be our choices for first names.  Rhea is a family name- my Oma’s name! Hailey was due on her wedding anniversary (though didn’t arrive then) and I have just always loved the name Rhea. Plus I love how they sound together… Hailey Rhea.   If she had been a boy she would have been Benjamin Gregory- we’ll have to save that for our first boy, unless we are blessed like my parents with all girls! Only time will tell but for now we’ll just concentrate on cute little Hailey.

The cats are still on edge about this new baby. Chase is so concerned everytime Hailey makes any sort of noise, it’s amusing to watch him react. Coco just sort of stays away.

Labour and Delivery was amazing and surprisingly quick (so I hear for it being my first), I’ll have to write a post about that later this week, after I gain the energy. I need to write it all down soon though, before I forget any moment.

I would say that the most amazing moment was right after she was delivered and I got to reach down to grab her to bring her up to me and the doctor says “What do we have mom?” and I got to announce that it was a girl!  We were very happily surprised and love her so much.

So there’s just a quick little into post for you, I’ll make sure to post again soon!

Something even awesomer happened yesterday.

It's A Girl!

Four of the blondes are now AUNTS.

One is now a MOM.

The ‘sixth blonde’ has entered the world! Kate and her daughter (born Saturday, January 23rd at 7:10pm) are doing excellently and will be heading home from the hospital tonight. Dad Scott is very proud. Kate will write about it all when she gets home – and upload photos, of course!

I don’t know what else to say right now other than we are SO FREAKING EXCITED. Micaela and I both got to cuddle our niece today (and even persuaded our husbands to hold her, if just for a minute or two!). She’s very pink, very tiny, and very sleepy!

I think that we can retire the Raspbaby name now…but you’ll have to come back to read Katelyn’s post to find our her name!

40 weeks and still waiting..

IMG_0181

My feet are officially swelling up, much longer and I will have cankles. I no longer even try to put my rings on, for fear of them not coming off.  I’m 40w2ds pregnant and feel like this baby is not coming out any time soon!

I have my 40 week appt today, so we will get to learn if anything has changed and will possibly talk induction. I’m going to wait as long as I can, but I’m just getting so excited to meet Raspbaby!

Scott is so excited for Raspbaby to arrive as well. He claims I’m hogging him/her (and have been for 9 months for that matter!), and wants me to share!

Here’s the video that Leah mentioned on Babywatch 2010. I took it on January 17th, the day before baby’s due date, I think it was celebrating early because my belly was going crazy that night!

Raspbaby is officially late!

But we are so ready for him or her. Come on out Raspbaby – we all want to meet you so badly!

If you follow us on Twitter you are privy to photos and fun facts about us that we don’t post on the blog. If you are “follower” (I hate saying that) of Kate then you would have seen her post a video of Raspbaby being extremely active in her belly – her belly was moving around all over the place. I thought it was very neat – but Mr. Leah refused to watch it!

Until Raspbaby comes, I will continue my daily phone calls to the very bored Kate and keep an eye on my phone at all times (I even sneakily checked it in the middle of my yoga class last night). On Sunday night I went to see The Lovely Bones with Mich and I left my phone in the car! I completely forgot about everything baby-related and couldn’t help but laugh out loud at myself on the way back to the car after the movie. Alas,  there were only two missed calls as opposed to the hundred or so I expect once Raspbaby is ready to be finished “downloading”.

Raspbaby's Nursery

This room has been a work in progress for quite some time. It took a long time for me to decide what I wanted and then when I thought I knew what I wanted, I was scared to make the decision.  I’m not a great decorator. I would love to be but just don’t have the drive I guess.  I don’t really believe that any room in my house accurately represents me. I love bright colours and patterns and no room in my house has anything of the sort.  I wanted this room to be the first room that I actually love and I’m happy with the way that it turned out. I love walking into it and dreaming of when the baby will sleep in the crib and I get to dress raspbaby in all his or her cute clothes!

After all that, here are some photos. (btw taking photos of rooms is really not my forte)

Here is a view of the room from the doorway.

The dresser from the doorway.  As you can see we decided on the white Ikea dresser. It’s not the highest quality ever made, but I love all the drawers and the room that it allows me to use to organize! It’s going to suck to move whenever we move.

Here are the cute alphabet letters that you see around the room.  I found them at Chapters, they are exactly what I was looking for.

Room003

I love the way the crib skirt turned out, and it was super easy too make (thanks mom!) and the quilt made by two of my aunts matches everything perfectly.

Here’s our stroller which matches- I didn’t even mean for this to happen, I guess I just really love green and brown! Mom bought me the diaper bag which is hanging on the back of the stroller. She couldn’t have matched it any better!

IMG_0142

Eventually we will move the glider into the corner of the room where the stroller is currently hanging out, but since we plan to have raspbaby sleep in our room in his or her cute cradle, we are leaving the glider in the living room for now.

Here the cradle, it’s in out living room right now because we need to move around the furniture in the bedroom before it will fit. So now we just get to stare at it all day and wonder when we will have a baby to fill it!

Boy or Girl??

I found this Wives’ Tale Survey on Good Finking and thought I’d test it out, since pretty soon we know for sure whether Raspbaby is a boy or girl.  I’ve been feeling boy all along, but ever since our friend Laura gave birth to a boy, when so many people thought girl, I feel like I have no idea anymore!

Boy or Girl? 21 Old Wives’ Tales That May Tell You

Sleep Position
Pay attention to which way you lay down in bed tonight. If you prefer sleeping on your left side, you’ll have a boy. Right side? You’re pregnant with a girl.

BOY-  when I first lay down I prefer to sleep on my left side. But I do toss & turn from my left to right throughout the night.

Upset Stomach
Little girls aren’t always sweet. Extreme nausea means you are having a daughter.

GIRL- ohhh the nausea.

Soft or Dry Hands
If your hands are dry during pregnancy, you are having a boy; soft—expect a girl.

GIRL

Food Cravings
Your favorite pregnancy foods may tell you what sex the baby is. If you’re craving citrus while pregnant, you’re having a girl.

GIRL-  I don’t really crave anything, but I have ate many oranges and apples.

Adult Acne
If altering hormones makes your skin break out, expect a girl.

GIRL-  acne=so not fun.

Graceful or Clumsy Pregnancy
If you feel as though you’re gliding through they day, you’ll have a girl. Stumbling? It’s a boy.

BOY- I drop things about 10 times a day, and then re-drop them while trying to pick it up!

Face Weight Gain
If your face gets fuller, it means you’re having a girl.

BOY- I think?  I have noticed my face filling out a bit, but no one else seems to see it?

Sugar and Spice Food Cravings
Craving salt during pregnancy? Potato chips, pretzels, and popcorn means a boy is on the way. Need a little something sweet? Ice cream, chocolate, and candy means you’re having a girl.

GIRL- CHOCOLATE!

Mood Changes
If you’re experiencing pregnant mood-swings, expect a baby girl to arrive soon.

GIRL- I’m the queen of mood swings. poor Scott

High or Low Pregnant Belly
If you’re carrying the baby low on your stomach, expect a boy. If it’s high, you’re having a girl.

GIRL- but I have also heard that carrying high means boy?

Baby Weight
If you’re carrying baby in front, it’s a boy. Is the baby weight spaced all around your middle? It’s a girl.

BOY- see me from behind and you wouldn’t even know there’s a baby in there.

Pendulum Test
Dangle a chain with a charm over your palm. If it swings back and forth: boy. In a circle: girl.

BOY- but it was hard to tell if it was going in circles or back and forth.

Model Your Hands
“Show me your hands.” If you would hold your hands palms up it’s a girl. Down? You’re having a boy.

BOY

Toddler Advice
Get baby advice from a nephew or friend’s little boy. If a toddler boy shows interest in your belly, you’ll have a girl. If he ignores you, it’s a boy.

I have no one to try this with! So we’re going green for neutral.

Eat Garlic
Guess the baby’s sex by eating garlic. If the smell seeps out of your pores it’s a boy. If there’s no scent it’s a little girl.

BOY- I smell garlic long after I’ve eaten it.

Key to Pregnancy
If you pick up a key by the round end, you’re having a boy. If it’s by the long end? A girl.

BOY

Even and Odd Numbers
If your age and year of conception are both even or odd, it’s girl. One even, one odd means a boy.

BOY- 24, 2009

Baby’s Heartbeat
If the baby’s heart beats more than 150 times per minute, you’re pregnant with a girl. Less than 150, it’s a boy.

BOY- it’s always been 140 or lower.

Stress Test
A child tends to be of the same sex as the parent who is less stressed at the time of conception.

BOY- Scott is rarely stressed- I’m a total stess pot.

Dream Meanings
If you dream about having a girl while pregnant, you will wind up having a boy and vice versa.

GIRL-  but I have dreams about having a girl as well.

Breast Size
If your right breast is larger than the left while pregnant, you are having a girl. If the left is larger, it’s a baby boy.

BOY- I think?

What are your guesses???

39 Weeks

I’m officially 39 weeks pregnant- 7 days until January 18th, my due date! I realize that due dates don’t really mean that much, it’s just an estimate of when the baby might come. Only about 5% of babies actually arrive on the due date, but it’s nice to have a date to grow towards. In reality I may have to wait up to 2 weeks after my due date, but because my blood pressure is climbing higher I think that the most I’ll have to wait is a week after my due date and they will probably induce me. I have an appointment on Wednesday, so I’ll know more then.

At this point I think I feel like the majority of pregnant ladies out there- thinking that this baby will never come out! I do think I am not as uncomfortable as most pregnant ladies though. I was blessed with a small baby bump and I am very thankful. The baby hasn’t been moving around as much these days, probably a mixture of running out of room, and *hopefully* getting ready to make it’s grand exit!

I’m starting to think this pregnant nesting urge is all made up.  I have not really received any huge cleaning urge, just the normal lazy Katelyn.  I did clean out the drawers in the bathroom today, but I don’t really consider that as counting as nesting.

The baby room is mostly complete. I just need to re-hang all of the alphabet prints- we used tape first to see how they would look and they are slowly all falling down- I think the alphabet has about 14 letters left. I need to pick up some good sticky tack or a tape that will work better. Here’s your sneek peek. I’ll get the whole thing posted later this week.

As for diapering- I’ve mentioned that we are cloth diapering.  We do plan on using disposables in the first month and probably throughout when we travel, just to help us get used to this whole baby thing. As you may know I have a pretty talented mom, who knows her way around a sewing machine. Mom has been making us pocket cloth diapers- I’m not sure how many she has made at this point, but as for the ones I have seen/received already they are adorable!  Mom used the Jalie pattern for the diapers- I don’t know if she had to alter much in the pattern, we’ll have to wait to see until she does a review of the diapers on her blog.

Here’s one of the cute yellow diapers.

The diaper unfolded- with a liner.

Showing off the pocket and an insert.

And one of the red ones.

Wouldn’t it be exciting if for my 40 week photo I was holding a baby?! Keep checking for updates!
