Showers of love

So far I have had 2 bridal showers. The first was a complete surprise! We were having a church choir party and it turned out that they had also decided that it would be fun to surprise me with a bridal shower. It was fun! I was nervous because it is pretty awkward to open gifts in front of people, but it turned out great. People are so generous at showers and Scott and I really do need everything because we are moving in together from our parents homes.

The second shower was this past weekend. Micaela (my sister) and her friend Amanda planned it for me. They titled it “Naughty and Nice”. We played funny games like ‘Decorate honeymoon underwear for Katelyn’, ‘make a bridal gown out of toilet paper’, ‘how well do you know Katelyn’ (the best score was 8/10) and ‘how well does Katelyn know Scott’ (I actually did fairly well, and for each answer I got wrong I had to chew another piece of gum). Again people were very generous and we got lots off of our registry.

I have 2 more showers before the wedding, one in September and one in October. I love showers, not because of the gifts but because it is so fun to see everyone at a casual event before the wedding. Some people I had not seen since university and it’s great to see them all again!

Here are some pictures of the event.. First up. Me modelling one of the pairs of underwear. Second up. Ashley (Scott’s sister) in her toilet paper dress. Third up. The newly engaged Erica, shes going to make a gorgeous bride eh? Hopefully her dress does not fall apart like her toilet paper dress!

When are YOU getting engaged?

I haven’t written for a while but I have a good reason! The password that wordpress gave me was in a notebook in my bedroom, which is upstairs… and all the computers are downstairs. Not that I’m lazy but it always seemed like something that could wait. Until now I guess!!

As you can see there are now two engaged blondes! And now I get to spend the next who knows how long fielding the question “When are YOU getting engaged?” Since I am going back to school and Kent wants to go back too, I don’t feel the need to get engaged ANY TIME soon. I am just enjoying him being home, and living near me for once! I’ll see how married life goes for my sisters then decide if I want that life!

I’m getting the “ten minute” warning from Kate that we have to leave for baseball. I don’t really have anything else in my mind to blog about anyways, so I’m gonna go get ready to go.

This is your life, I get copied keys

This week has been such a big week for us. These coming weeks will also hold big changes for this family. Erica getting engaged, me leaving to go to university, Kent moving away (again). It seems every time he comes over he is permanently here for a couple weeks, then disappears.

So now that I’m going away it will be hard for me to live vicariously through my sisters. It seems that I am always a third wheel in their relationships, and I’d have to say I’m pretty okay with it…the boyfriends may not be, but thats alright.  Having just spent a “weekend” away camping with two of my best friends who are going back to high school for another year has made me think about keeping these friendships when I go away. I think I’ll try, but seeing as how I get jealous easily, I’ll see how much time they spend together and most likely get disappointed or something.

Strange Coincidences

Sometimes in life there are strange coincidences – it may even take you a while to notice them.

On Sunday, Micaela and Lauren hosted a bridal shower for Katelyn at our house. It was a friends/sisters/cousins bridal shower with the theme “Naughty or Nice”, so naturally we had to kick the parents and the boyfriend/fiances out of the house.

Dad went off with a good family friend, Bob (affectionatly referred to as “Dad’s boyfriend”), while Mom and the boys went golfing at The Fox. We girls had a lovely time making honeymoon undies, toilet-paper wedding dresses, drinking mimosas, enjoying the treats made for us by resident chef/Micaela’s boyfriend Kent, and admiring the gifts for the bride!

Later that evening, my FIANCE (I’m still getting used to writing and saying that!) was telling me about their golf game. He noted that he and Kent shared clubs as Kent doesn’t own a set and hasn’t golfed in several years and, among the 4 or 5 sets of clubs at our house, there are no left handed golf clubs.

He then realized that himself, Kent, and Scott (Kate’s fiance) are all left handed golfers who do everything else right handed (as far as I know). Meanwhile, they were golfing with Mom, a righty golfer – but lefty everything else.

What are the chances? Seriously. Three sisters, dating/engaged to three men who are all lefty golfers who do everything else right-handed. Strange coincidence. Or just strange.

What a Weekend!

This blonde had a wild and wonderful weekend!

Friday was my (Erica) birthday – the big 2-5. Mom and dad gave me a digital camera – I’ve been the only one in the family without one forever! I was especially excited to get a camera because my boyfriend Denis and I had a trip to Niagara Falls planned to celebrate my birthday. A romantic weekend getaway! Why Niagara Falls? It’s close enough to make the trip economical, but far enough away from home to feel like we’re really getting away – and of course the Falls are beautiful!

On Saturday we went for a walk by the falls and navigated our way around all the other tourists. Then, we packed a lunch and headed to the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens for a picnic. Denis had been fixated on having this picnic ever since booking the trip, which made me wonder if the picnic was just an excuse for something else…however, I didn’t let myself get too excited because I didn’t want to be disappointed if what I was hoping would happen, didn’t happen. Whether he had ulterior motives or not, we were going to have a great time.

We found a secluded spot at the edge of the gardens – no random people wandering around and interupting our picnic. I began eating (I was hungry!) and Denis…didn’t eat. I didn’t even notice, but he told me after that he was “too nervous”!

Why was he nervous? Well, after we (I mean, I) had eaten, Denis told me to turn around because he had a surprise for me. So I did…and when he told me to turn around again, there were two yummy-looking cupcakes! He sang Happy Birthday to me too, which I thought was incredibly sweet as he usually thinks stuff like that is ‘dorky’.

After singing, he announced that he had another surprise for me. What could the other surprise be? Well, I can tell you what was going through my head: omigodthisisitthisisit…he was already on his knees and asked me to stand up. I did, and I think I may have looked scared (I know I was covering my mouth with my hands) because Den asked, “Are you ready for this?” I didn’t think; I just nodded!!

From that moment on, everything was a blur – mostly because of the tears streaming down my face! My entire body was shaking. I realize now that I have always looked forward with great anticipation and excitement to this moment in my life, but never thought about my reaction. I didn’t expect to be so emotional! Denis was perfectly composed, as far as I could tell at least. He pulled a ring out of his pocket, held it out and told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me.

Once I managed to squeak out “Yes!” and compose myself, I actually looked at the ring through damp eyes and I must say is is completely beautiful. It is exactly the right style – and he picked it out himself, with only Katelyn and Scott there for ‘moral support’. We spent about 30 minutes calling family (even the ones who already knew) to share the good news before packing up our picnic. The rest of the day we simply enjoyed our time in Niagara Falls – we went to Fallsview Casino (hey, we felt lucky) and Den won $320! Flush with cash, we had dinner at The Keg. We had champagne and the restaurant gave us complimentary chocolate mocha ice cream cake as a ‘congratulations’.

Well, that is the story of our engagement! It’s “Facebook Official” – I changed my relationship status this morning and the good wishes are pouring in. We’re excited and are enjoying being engaged – no planning just yet!

Didn’t like the grass.

The grass was boring.  It was cut so perfectly, and the colour was so even – it just wasn’t us.

Lauren!

Helloo, I’m Lauren, the youngest sister(hence the “lilsister” name). I’m 18, and not very good at “blogging” at all. I’ve just graduated grade 12, and I’m going to Carleton in Ottawa in almost exactly a month! As Mic was telling me earlier, “having facebook totally changes the whole starting university experience.” SO true. I already know about 15 people in my residence and probably more in my program. (yeaaa just saw my high school on tv!….behind the gay pride parade in london on the news!) Anyways, this is definately not where I saw myself at this time last year. At this time last year I was living in a cabin in the middle of nowhere with 25 other girls. I was planning on taking a year off, either to work, go back to high school or travel, but for some reason I didn’t want to go to university yet…that is until I received my acceptance letter! Up until the day I got the letter I had planned to go to BC to work at Panorama from July until October, then work the rest of the year. When I got my letter I realized that I just wanted to get my life started and start my education.
Alright, enough with this for tonight, I work at 8 tomorrow morning then have my staff party!(trailer park themed of course…)

Requisite “About Me” post

Kate started off with a great “About Me” post, and I’m hoping that everyone will follow suit! I guess everyone includes me…

Let’s start off with important things about me:

  • This is hard. Putting something at the top of a list generally indicates that it is the most important thing on the list. But wait! Now, there is no “first” on the list! There’s…this!
  • I love: my boyfriend (although he is opposed to the idea of blogging); my sisters; my family (immediate, extended, and future); my job & my co-workers; golf; snowboarding; technology; tall no-whip mochas; HGTV.
  • I hate: seizures; being reliant on medication.
  • I want: a Macbook and a digital camera. PS- my birthday is next month…

That’s all I can think of right now.

In The Beginning…

There was a Facebook message.

It was from me, to my four sisters. “Would you guys like to set up a collaborative blog?” I asked. Each of us has blogged at one time or another – we were just never very good at keeping up with it.

“I don’t mean a blog for blogging’s sake, but something we can monetize and make money off of too. Ad revenue could be worth our time. ” I thought that might peak their interest even more.

The second paragraph had a more laid back, flattering approach: “Quite honestly I think we have pretty exciting lives that others might find interesting. Mom’s a terrific writer and could have a section. If we can each commit to writing at least an article a week, we could have some fun.”

Now for the final push: “I can register the domain name 5sisters.ca right now for $20 for a full year. Doesn’t include hosting but I can look into that. We likely will need to invest a little bit into having some graphic design work done, unless we can manage it.”

I’ve always wanted a domain.

“Interested? Have a different suggestion for domain? Let me know…”

I got a positive response from Kate less than 30 minutes later. Success! Leah chimed in later that evening with a suggestion of an alternate domain name. The next morning brought a message from Micaela, who wants to be “world famous.” Well hey, if we have readers from all over the world eventually, doesn’t that qualify as world famous?

We’ve since settled on FiveBlondes.ca, a perfect description of us.

Oh, and the fifth sister? Lauren? Would someone kick her butt out of bed already?

Side note: I can’t find a theme that I like.  I have a graphic design in mind for us, however no graphics program with which to make it reality.  At least I can work out the coding until then!

Welcome to Five Blondes.

We’re sisters. There’s five of us. We’re (usually) all blonde.  It was a fairly logical name choice.  That, and the domain is available!  Yay us – our own domain! Coming soon to a computer near you.
