25 Before 25

Back in November I turned 23 (remember when my Mom surprised me in Calgary?) and after reading an amazing list of “25 Things to do Before 25″ on a blog that I can’t currently remember the name/address of I chose to do one as well. Goals are important, and while some of these are quite frivolous and some may seem small they are all very important to me.

I have a year and ten months to go, and here is my list.

1.) Run a half-marathon

2.) Take a road trip with the boyfriend

3.) Become a morning person

4.) Go horseback riding in the mountains

5.) Have at least $7000 saved for a down-payment for a home (obviously the purchasing of a home will not happen in the next  two years…)

6.) Buy new snowboard gear (board, boots, bindings, coat)

7.) Sit on the board of an organization

8.) Hold a full-time position that utilizes my Gerontology degree

9.) Own a diamond (before you all get too excited – this can be in the form of a necklace, earrings or a ring. And maybe I will buy it for myself – who knows!)

10.) Travel to Vancouver

11.) Get a tattoo

12.) Gain a professional mentor

13.) Grow a garden

14.) Learn to play the guitar

15.) Acquire a piece of vintage furniture and re-create it

16.) Wear more dresses

17.) Go surfing

18.) Give myself an A+ for budgeting for three months straight (I grade myself biweekly on how well I stick to my budget)

19.) Take my time – with everything. This includes being a calmer person, being prepared in advance (whether for a date or a presentation) and becoming more aware of my surroundings

20.) Donate blood as often as I can

21.) Encourage Mr. Leah to start a cooking blog, or have him do a regular guest blog feature here

22.) See Simon and Garfunkel in concert

23.) Take a trip with girlfriends

24.) Decorate a room to my taste

25.) Model in a fashion show

Last night a girlfriend and I read our lists on the phone to each other (she has 100 before 50) and it is a great way to keep yourself in check. Little did she know that she had accomplished about 15 items on her list in one short year! We were surprised at how many ideas on our list were the same and will be doing some of our items together.

I had a dream.

Ever since I was a young girl, I have had very odd dreams. Kind of like I ingest crazy drugs right before I go to sleep, so I dream all crazylike but when I wake up it is gone. Often (way too often, if you ask my sisters), conversations at the dinner table started with me asking “Guess what I dreamt about last night?”, and ended with groans all around.

Well, my dear girls, guess what I dreamt about last night?

(Insert groans here)

Instead of a pig farm we had a wild African safari animal farm and we had tons of wild animals, especially elephants and rhinoceros’ (rhinoseri?) and the elephants and rhinos would run around everywhere and bully everyone and throw all the other animals really high in the air. And then they would chase us all over the place except we were never scared of them.

So welcome to a night in the life of Leah. It is not uncommon for me to wake up laughing because my dreams are so out there, and it always makes for an interesting sleep!

Tell me about your dreams!

A Very Important Birthday

Wow, doesn’t it seem like there is always a birthday happening at the FiveBlondes? It works out for us, as we sisters love to celebrate.

Today is an extra-important birthday – it is her last single birthday, her first foray into her LATE 20′s, and she was the first of the infamous five blonde farm girls. She was the one who started the often asked and ever-hated question … “Which one are you again?”

Without this girl, our blog would be a puddle of words, swept into a closet in a farm house only to be forgotten about.

So Eri Scari – HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM YOUR SISTERS! This year will be such an exciting one for you, and for all of us. And Thank you for bringing this site to life and us so much closer together. And as the Dutch would say, Congratulations to your parents. Happy 26th!

Do The Panda! And other strange wedding dreams.

Before I launch into writing, I want to tell everyone that I am changing D’s blog name. He will no longer be known as ‘D’ so that I no longer have to begin sentences nonsensically explaining what “D and I” did. Ultimately I would of course like to use his real first name (HINT HINT), but so far I havn’t been able to convince him that no one will stalk him and that he won’t be fired from his job because he is mentioned on a blog. Shock and horror! Anyway, I will now be referring to D as “Mr. X”. I know that it sounds extremely generic, but the “X” actually has signifigance in our life (not to mention the general sexiness of writing about my life with Mr. X!).

I’m still working on persuading him to let me put his picture on the blog sometime so you can all see how cute he is – especially since (sisters you will be happy to hear this!) he will be growing his beard back starting this weekend! I love the facial hair. I can’t stop Mom from posting his picture on her blog though…hint hint! Unfortunately I also can’t stop Mom from leaving pictures of my WEDDING DRESS on the KITCHEN TABLE, making it extremely possible that Mr. X might see it! MOM!!!

Shoot, where was I? Oh yes – As wedding planning has moved into the forefront of my brain over the last few weeks, I’ve begun to dream about weddings. And, as it seems with all dreams of an impending life event, things go very…strangely. I’ve had some weird dreams caused by his family in the past (the one that comes to mind involves a squirrel named Shirley with talons jumping out a freezer onto my face – they still tease me!), and these dreams are just as odd.

In my first, short wedding dream, I arrive at our reception only to be told by Mr. X that the party is over! Indeed, everyone is leaving our reception hall and I haven’t had a bite to eat, nor danced a step. Bummer!

The second dream is the stranger of the two. The ceremony goes off without a hitch, and I’ve (finally!) made it to the reception. At one point someone (I think mom?) takes me to the ladies room and persuades me to switch outfits. I realize that sounds really odd, but odder yet is the fact that I am not wearing my wedding dress anymore. I’m wearing a skirt. So we switch and I’m now wearing jeans. At my wedding. Every bride’s dream (HA!). We head out to the hall again, just in time to see Leah and Tim launch into the latest, choreographed new dance craze: The Panda.

I gotta tell you, in my dream the Panda looked pretty darn cool. Leah and Tim seemed to really have it down pat – whatever it was. However, I just cannot get over the fact that, in my dream, there was a dance inspired by panda bears. Seriously, what about pandas is dancable? I think about them and I think,

  1. Slow
  2. Lumbering
  3. Bamboo

The Panda was anything but slow and lumbering. Bamboo may or may not have been used – my dream didn’t give me a good angle to watch it from (don’t you hate that?). But yowza. Pandas. There is something wrong with my mind.

FiveBlondes is going National!

I have put off writing this post because it always felt so far away, but time sure does creep up on you sometimes. A little while ago, you may recall that I was questioning life choices after graduation. Well, decisions have been made and now I am about to follow my dream boy across the country to the beautiful city of Calgary! The car drives out next Tuesday, May 27th. We are road-trippin’ our way across the nation to our new home for the next year. Lucky for us, I have amazing relatives out west who have already invited us into their homes until we find our perfect place to make into our home. Today was a bittersweet day, because I finished my last day at my current job (professional barmaid, bartender, petal, bar wench, whatever those crazy Europeans come up with at the moment), and have left my amazing coworkers and bosses at My Favourite Pub.

Currently I am deciding what Calgary-Leah will be like … I thrive on change and actively pursuing new and exciting adventures.

Hometown friends – there will be some sort of gathering chez Bontje farm on Sunday, so pop on over if you have time! I will keep you updated concerning times.

P.S. Don’t forget to vote for us!

What does my dream mean?

Hey all, youngest here. So lately I’ve been really into finding out what my dreams mean. Mostly because my roommates friend is really into it an he always asks me what I dreamt about. Last night I dreamt:-I was walking on a beach-It was Ericas wedding and it was in the middle of a city. Thats all I really remember from the dreams. Sometimes I have really vivid dreams and remember so much of it the next morning, then when I tell it to a friend I always end up remembering more and it takes like 10 minutes.

So according to dreammoods.com, the first part of that dream means that my two states of mind are meeting. The sand symbolizes the rational and mental processes, and the water symbolizes the irrational, unsteady and emotional aspects of myself. There was more sand on the beach than usual…does that mean that I’m going to become really smart? And there was also a huge moat on the beach separating me from the ocean, so I really have no idea.

The second part (Er’s wedding), symbolizes a new beginning or transition in my current life. Interestingly enough, dreams about weddings are usually negative and highlight some anxiety or fear (perhaps about me being the only sister without a boyfriend for Valentines day? Not like thats a new concept or anything). Alternatively, wedding dreams reflect issues about commitment and independence. So that’s my dream in a nutshell, haha.

If you’ve had any weird dreams, feel free to comment with them! -LB

Dreams

Sometimes dreams feel so real when you wake up you are surprised, and sometimes this surprise is relief because you are no longer in the dream. I am the kind of person who experiences many of these dreams, and I had one last night.

Some of you may not know this but Micaela and I are brownie leaders. A week or 2 ago I was talking to a blog stalker (HI Little Leah!) and telling her a humorous tale of a pot-luck that Micaela and I went to with other guider leaders in our area. The stalker was very surprised that I was a brownie leader because apparently we don’t mention it much in out blogs. So there you go, Micaela and I are brownie leaders.

Anyways back to the dream. Mic and I have a craft night planned for tonight, we looked all over to find styrofoam cones (at a reasonable price, they are so expensive at Michaels!) and finally found some and have just enough for 9 brownies. Now in my dream I dreamed that we were at brownies and all of these stranger children came too. We had about 8 new brownies and 5 of them were boys (boys are not allowed to be brownies)! And these boys were not age 7 and 8 like normal brownies, they were about 13 and 16 and claimed to be 7. In my dream all the parents decided to stay and watch us with the brownies and were so loud. The brownies meeting was a nightmare because we did not have enough supplies and the kids were crazy. In my dream they were running all aound the basement of the church where we have meetings and it was horrible. Then my alarm clock went off, with the radio turned way too loud and I was startled out of the dream. And very happy to be out of it, but a bit stressed out.

I think I had the dream because our craft supplies were so hard to find, because the meeting was post phoned from last week because the weather was so bad last week, and because Mic and I are slacker brownies leaders and we never have it quite planned out, although it always turns out well.

So that’s my dream about brownies and confession that Mic and I are slacker brownie leaders.

Leah always has really good dreams, and eating a meal with her is never complete without learning about Leah’s weird dreams. Like the one where Mic is pregnant and Leah and Mic climb into Micaela’s womb and bash it inside out, but thats another story for another time…

It’s always annoying when people want to tell you about their dreams…

Waking up for work pretty much sucks all of the time, but this morning I had a silly dream (it was about the baby show that my aunt runs at the Thorndale fair, and that my sisters and I help out with). I dreamt that instead of just sitting there looking cute, the babies had to dance in order to win. Anyways, the dream was kind of stupid but the funny part was that I was laughing so hard while I was sleeping that it woke me up! So instead of waking up tired or grumpy, I woke up laughing. :) Kent thought I was nuts and was like “why are you laughing at me?!?!”

So if you want to have a good day, I definitely recommend waking up laughing. I was in a good mood all day, maybe because of it, maybe not.

Anyways, it’s time to go get ready for the biggest weekend in our town’s history – the 150th Annual Fall Fair! I am baking pies to enter, and I need to go buy apples from the orchard down the road.
