This isn’t Five Blondes blogging today. Instead, it’s just one brunette, Angela, from My Quiet Testimony doing a blogswap today. Your favorite Five Blondes (one of them, at least!) are over at my blog today.
Anywho. My point today is that I love getting packages in the mail. Isn’t it awesome? They don’t have to be wrapped with brown paper and tied up with string to be one of my favorite things. For all I care it can be a shoebox with duct tape.
I got a package today from my mother in the mail. Normally her boxes are filled with mail from home, maybe some candy (I still have a full, unopened bag of candy corn from before Halloween that she sent me), mostly boring stuff. She sent me a box on Saturday and didn’t expect me to get it until Wednesday. But no, it was waiting for me at the apartment when I got home from school this afternoon. Expecting the normal boring things, I was SO surprised to open the box (a little smaller than a shoebox) and find two pomagranates, two artichokes, a box of baklava, some candy, cake icing (long story, I’ll have to blog about it one day), some magazines, mail, etc. She definitely outdid herself with this box. The artichokes? Awesome. They don’t really sell them in Pennsylvania. At least I haven’t noticed them in the grocery store. But since they mainly grow in California, where I’m from, she keeps in mind that they’re one of my favorite vegetable. I’ll be cooking them probably tomorrow.
I’m also expecting a package from Amazon with a digital camera that I ordered. This package is kind of annoying, though. The camera was delivered by UPS to my apartment almost two weeks ago, but the UPS man/woman just left it on the porch. Guess what? I never got it. So it’s been a big ordeal having to call UPS and the Amazon seller I ordered the camera from. Luckily, they got insurance on the package and they’ll send me another one, but I have no idea when.
In any case, getting packages is awesome. Waiting around for them, on the other hand, is not.

Funny that you should write this on our blog just as I finished wrapping a package for someone. I’m so excited to send it!

how do you cook your artichokes?? my husband looooves them, but can never really figure out how to make them. I’d love to make them for him sometime…and I’m hoping you’re a bit of an expert!
Allison,
Fill a really big pot with about two inches of water and let it start to simmer. Cut the stems off the artichokes and add to the water. Let them simmer (or just under a simmer) for about two hours. You’ll know they’re ready when you can stick a fork up inside the stem and it’s tender. Just drain and enjoy! Make sure they’re a little cool, though, before you eat them!
