Being kind and gentle to my soul.

in Calgary, leah, life, love

I once had to do a volunteer training group when I was working at a sexual assault centre. The group ran on Thursdays from 6:00pm-10:00pm during my fourth year of University and I can’t even tell you how much I thought it was going to cramp my style. I dreaded it, but it turned out to be one of the most inspiring, moving experiences I have ever had and I looked forward to it every week. It was more of a group therapy session and was run by an amazing woman who consistently told us to be kind and gentle to our souls.

In learning to be kind and gentle to my soul, I became my best friend. By following this idea and maturing in general, I find that I love myself more and more every day. I don’t mean that in an obnoxious, narcissistic way but rather in a happy, comfortable way. The parts of my body and personality that I used to find ugly and frustrating are now some of my favourite things about myself.

For example, my feet. I used to think they were too long (size 9.5),  too skinny and too bony. Also, I have bunions on the sides of my big toes. I would always wear socks, or try to hide my feet or somehow try to make them look smaller. Now? I think my feet are quirky and fun and absolutely perfect. My feet have helped me to win races, and they fit into beautiful shoes withot complaining too much. I love my feet.

Left, my feet. Right, Nat’s beautiful feet.

What is one thing that you absolutely love about your awesome self? Tell me in the comments. You can’t imagine how great it feels to write it down and share it with others. Be kind and gentle to your soul today!

I love this post! My favourite line from one of my favourite books The Shellseekers was one that the mother and daughter would say to each other – “Cherish yourself.” Seems to fit in here and it’s something I have tried to do more and more as I grow older. Something I used to hate and tried to hide (not easy!) was my loud voice. It’s a family trait. When I get excited or passionate about something, I get loud. My voice carries like crazy and my laugh? Oh my I swear you can hear all the way from London to Calgary! But one day I realized something. It’s GOOD to get excited. It’s GOOD to be passionate about what you believe in. It’s GOOD to be such a mostly happy and optimistic person that your exuberance simply bubbles over. And it feels good to say this here too. Reminds me of just how much I love this particular quirk of mine! Thanks Leah!

I have a “pretty large for a freckle” freckle under my left eye. My mom has it too and even though you can’t really see it in pictures and professional photographers tend to photoshop it out, I LOVE IT! Maybe because it’s genetic? Who knows. But that’s my favorite thing!

What a great post!

I love my honesty. It separates me from a good majority of the people I know and allows me to be me with no excuses. It’s so refreshing.

I have a few things I love about myself. LOL… But I will only post one.

I would have to say that I LOVE my TEETH =} I have white teeth that look like I have had work done, but I havent. When I was in middle school a girl would tell me all the time how she loved my teeth and how straight they were.

I love my scars! I have tons, mostly from cheerleading, and one on my shin from a fairly drunken night with my cheerleading friends, but since they remind me of cheerleading they make me happen.

Yay for your scars (cheerleading related or not). Our imperfections are one of the most important things about us and it is great to embrace them. I love your scars too.My ComLuv Profile

Just to add to my comment- I don’t have like millions of scars from cheerleading, I have 3 main ones- 1 on my knee from a skinned knee from this semester, one on my arm from a girl’s tooth, and one across my lip from my stitches last year.

I love my hips. My big ol’ hips. They give me curves (sexy curves!) and they make me oh so womanly.

I love my ears! They don’t have any cartilage in them so they stick out a little which I used to hate when I was little. But now I think they are goofy and quirky and even after knowing me for years, my friends still ask to feel my ears b/c they are silly!

I love my legs! It took me a minute to think of something (that is probably not a good sign) but I really do love my legs and love showing them of in dresses and skirts. One night in college, I met a random boy who told me I had amazing calves… I never thought about it before but ever since I have to agree and love my calves! lol Sounds funny, I know. :)
