Optimism vs Pessimism

The optimist sees the rose and not its thorns; the pessimist stares at the thorns, oblivious to the rose. — Khalil Gibran

I realized long ago that I was an optimist. At least, I try to be. I think it comes with having a supportive family who are always encouraging you and willing to lend a helping hand.

My husband, however, is a bit of a pessimist. I discovered our inherent difference a few years ago at the ATM machine, of all places. After withdrawing some cash, he would always count it very carefully. One day he commented to me that he did this to “make sure that the machine didn’t short him”.

“Really?” I answered. “I count the bills hoping that they gave me extra!”

If that’s not an optimist and a pessimist, I don’t know what is.

Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist?

If only I could always be optimistic in this world full of atrocities, it would truly be a blessing. However, I realized that life should be experienced for whatever it is. Either pleasant or unpleasant, I should see the wisdom behind everything. :-)

I am an annoyingly persistent eternal optimist.

Optimist! But you knew that already ;)

I am also an optimist! I do the same thing at ATM’s, and everytime I pull up to a drive through one I think there will be extra cash someone has forgotten in there!! LOL

I like to think that I am an optimist but most of the time I think I am a realist. I do try to see the best in people and in situations though.

  6. Lauren says:

pessimist in some (most) situations, optimist in others.

  7. I would generally say I’m an optimist, but according to your ATM definition, I’m a pessimist!

  8. Erica says:

Mostly optimists here! Mandy, great point about being a realist. I think everyone is a realist to a point.
