By now, you’ve likely heard the story of the woman who was fired because she gave away a $0.16 Timbit. That event happened here in our city of London (where are about 10 Tim Horton’s stores on every block). I’m completely sick of seeing the story everywhere (it’s still one of the most popular stories on Reuters.com) and it seems that I can’t even escape while I enjoy a game of Scrabulous:
Yup, that’s Nicole holding a timbit. Also, you can see the edge of my Scrabulous game. I’m winning. Anyway, I like clever marketing like this. It’s possible that she’s seen this ad because she does indeed have a Facebook profile. Not much on it but she has written a few posts on her wall and joined her own support group. Not to be rude but she may want to spellcheck everything she writes as it is nearly illegible.
Everyone and their timbit-eating-toddler has been weighing in on this issue so I might as well put in my $0.02 worth. Hey, look! My opinions are worth less than a Timbit.
Do I think she should have been fired? Hard to answer without knowing her performance history at this job. Also hard to answer as I don’t know Tim Horton employee policies. I truly can’t answer this question.
Do I think that Tim Horton’s customers should be rude to the employees? Heck, no! I understand that this has been an unfortunate reality at many TH locations in London. The people behind the counter have nothing to do with the decisions that are made in the manager’s office! Why take your anger out on people that have nothing to do with what happened? Contact the store manager or, better yet, the corporate office. Customer service can be emailed at: customer_service@timhortons.com.

Oh honey… “The people behind the counter have nothing to do with the decisions that are made in the manager’s office!” Nothing could be farther than the truth for every aspect of customer service. I used to work at Ikea, and people would violently yell at me because the couch they wanted didn’t come in the colour they wanted. Ikea bought me my ticket on the bitter train. I’m lucky I regained my ‘excellent interpersonal & communication skills’ after leaving Ikea.
As for this girl… I have to admit that I felt a pang of pain for her when I saw her brief interview where she mentioned that she was a single mother of 4. But, the more I hear about the incident the more I think… get over it. If a different location gave her a job that easily, I’m sure she could’ve gotten another job as just easily. Tim Horton’s strikes me as the kind of establishment that clearly states those acts that would result in termination, if she was really so concerned about supporting her family - she wouldn’t have risked it. She could’ve asked the manager if it was ok to give away a Timbit. But instead, she decided to be her own boss… I’m probably being harsh, but that’s just me.
Sorry for the long winded comment Erica!

p.s. forgive my typo: I mean ’she could’ve gotten another job JUST as easily.’

It was the funniest story of last week. A lot of people said that she was dumb enough to get fired cause of it, then she should have stayed fired and not be brought back.

As a former employee of good old Tim Hortons, there has to be some background information that the public doesn’t know about, becuase we used to give them away to little kids all the time and nothing was ever said or done about it, and at 3 in the morning when the new stuff is being made we used to either give it away to whomever we felt like giving it to, a farmer would come in and get it ( he used to feed his pigs with them. ) or just throw it in the garbage.
I heard on FM96 (they had an interview with her) that apparently the manager had it out for her because she was the store representative and had to tell head office (or whomever) all the things that the other employees had complaints about, and apparently she reported her manager and said she wasn’t showing up at work hardly ever (and the manager was on salary). But who knows, there must be more to the story.
