My Flooded Backyard

Snow has been melting like CRAZY for the last couple of days. The photo above was taken from the end of my backyard - as you can see, it WAS a soccer field. Now, it’s a lake. Just last week there were deer prancing in that field! OK, maybe they weren’t prancing, but they did prance when there was snow. They wandered right up to our living room window one morning just 3 weeks ago. Can you believe that there is a developer that wants to plow down all those trees and build a housing development right there? Right where you’re looking? He thinks that he’ll be able to fill in that entire area with clean fill. Personally, I would say that the area is better suited for a beach than a apartment complex.

Reading the paper today, it turns out that a lot of the flooding has happened because the Fanshawe dam has been opened in anticipation of heavy rain tomorrow and Friday. In short…things will get worse before they get better. I’m planning an alternate bus route for tomorrow morning because this morning my bus stop was completely under water.

Thames River Flooded

Credits for these last two photos go to Jesse James Taylor (yes, that’s his real name!).

Here are two pictures of the Thames River in St. Mary’s. Keep in mind that this is actually *before* the dam - this is all melted snow (I think)!! These were taken by Lauren’s friend Jacky. Micaela and Kent recently moved to St. Mary’s - their house is just along the river, but happily their apartment is upstairs! How are your neighbors, anyway?

Torrid Waters!Flooding in St. Mary’sSurfing, anyone?

UPDATE:

The Freeps (London Free Press) has another article up about my neighborhood today.  Also, the front page of the paper has a great aerial shot of downtown.  There’s a park under all that water…

    That last picture scares the crap out of me. I can’t swim to save my life so any sort of deep or out of control water (even pictures) gives me the creeps!

    It is crazy - Harris Park is gone.
    Pretty wild stuff …

    I checked out the LTC website and (as expected) there’s been no attempt to post alternative route info. Since the Commission operates as a complaints-driven system, it’s important to contact them so that your real-world experiences will be reflected in their stats and addressed by the Board…

    @Jason It is a scary pic! Doesn’t seem real. It’s like something you would see on TV. Great shot though.

    @RebelliousGirl UGH yeah. The “lake” in my backyard was all icy this AM.

    @Canucklehead I didn’t even think of Harris Park! Yeah, obv it must be submerged. And then whatever happened with the train crossing downtown today? London is wacky.

    @Greg
    LTC did set up an alternate route yesterday - I caught the Windemere up by Kipps Lane. I was impressed by the service. But yeah, contacting them is a great idea, thanks for the contact info!

    I’m in Barrie. I’ve been trying to chop a hole down to the fish in the pond but can’t get through the ice yet. Still lots of snow here but a lot is gone. It had been right up to the start of the roof just a few weeks ago. I don’t know where all the water is going. I’ve seen puddles but not a flood anywhere I have been.

    Man o man. Toronto isn’t that bad thank goodness. I was surprised though, at how fast all the snow melted and I haven’t seen any signs of flooding… yet. I haven’t been anywhere but work so… *shrug*
