And oh, BY THE WAY…

Written by Erica. Filed Under random

A friend of mine shared this…strange…story with me today. I apologize for the vague-ness, but I had to promise to make the story as un-identifiable as possible (don’t want my friend to get dooced via Five Blondes!)

My friend was on a conference call for work. After the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the call was finished, his boss began asking everyone what they had planned for that evening. Everyone had pretty typical answers, until it was Joe’s turn.

Joe: “Oh, I’m going to be in the hospital tonight.”

dead silence.

Boss: “Um, ok…why don’t we wrap this call up then. Joe, stay on the call. Everyone else, have a great evening.”

So Joe and the boss stayed on the call. And so did my friend. He just had to know what was up…

It turns out that Joe’s wife was expecting and was going to be admitted into the hospital that evening to be induced. And his boss had no idea that Joe’s wife was pregnant.

WHO DOESN’T TELL THEIR BOSS THAT THEIR WIFE IS PREGNANT??? They see each other every day. Wouldn’t you think that the topic might come in the nine months BEFORE the due date? Isn’t that a rather IMPORTANT piece of information that you should generally TELL your boss? I mean, just in case. Picture this: Joe gets a call from his wife, who has gone into labour. Joe calls his boss to tell him that he has to rush to the hospital because his wife is giving birth. Boss: “WHAT??” I wouldn’t be surprised if his boss straight-up didn’t believe him!

I wonder if his wife knew that he hadn’t told his boss.

I used to work at a Dr’s office and my higher ups knew absolutely nothing about my personal life. They knew I was married, but never met my husband. And when I was going through my adoption, they didn’t know anything about it either. There’s just some things we like to keep to ourselves when there are situations that might need a greater explanation.

For all we know Joe’s wife might be a surrogate and didn’t want to tell his co-workers :)

    Ahh that is sooo crazy!!!
I would be soo mad (considering it was a typical relationship, and Monique’s very insightful response isn’t the situation) at my husband/partner!!!!!

I don’t think I would even think to tell my employer (if I was a man I mean). I would think my boss would just be like oh….thanks? Buut I don’t really have an office job or anything, so I probably wouldn’t know.

LOL… I realized recently that I’d been in a wheelchair for almost a year and had been through all sorts of health crises and none of my husband’s friends or coworkers knew about it. I had to explain to him that it would be normal to talk about it and in fact would get him some good emotional support.

it all depends on the work setting, not all people have good relationships with their boss or feel the need to tell them personal things, the only reason my husbands boss knows i’m having a baby is because he’s also my father-in-law.. haha

That is insane. Are you sure he wasn’t just making it up to get out of work the next day? I’ve heard worse excuses.

Wow I can’t believe he didn’t tell his boss. Was he not planning on taking any time off after the baby was born??? Crazy.

That’s pretty wild. I can’t imagine my husband not sharing that news. I mean in the course of the nine months I did have days that I needed him to come home early so I could go to an appt. etc.

And like Katelin pointed out, didn’t he plan some vacation time. Wow.

my husband didn’t take any days off when i had our son because i had my mom with me and didn’t really need him around, im having another one and this time he’s only taking about 4 days off, so i dont really find it weird that he didn’t tell his boss, maybe he doesn’t like him and didn’t want him knowing anything about his personal life.
