Yesterday, Mr X called me up while at work with the delightful idea of going downtown today and hitting up my favorite shops on Richmond Row. Some of these shops fall into my “hate to love” category as the pricetags are well out of my budget, but a girl can dream, right? Also, my birthday is in less than 10 days (consider this fair notice, everyone!) and since I don’t really know what I’d like for my birthday (advice is appreciated), we thought we might find something for me on our trip downtown.
Before we started shopping, we went to the market to grab some coffee and cookies. There is a local coffee shop that has the best mocha shortbread cookies! The fact that I only have them a few times a year makes them even more special. We walked up to the shop and noticed a sign: Cookies 2 for 1 !!! Yes, my favorite cookies were on two for one. Why yes, I’d love to double my order for free!
Once we had our cookies and coffee we went out for a walk. A police car zipped by us, but hey, we were downtown (and at that point in one of the sleazier areas of downtown). But wait – another police car? And another…going the wrong way down a one way street? Cops running? They were chasing down a guy right across the street from us – it was our own live-action version of COPS!
As the guy (suspect?) was running, a group of burly-looking men came out of a shop just ahead of him. The suspect decided to dash down an alley rather than run by these big guys and a cop was close behind. Unfortunately for both of them, the alley had two high spiky fences! Meanwhile, there were dozens of people watching this go down, cheering on the cop as he tried to leap over the fence (whether they were cheering sarcastically or seriously I still am not sure). Although they had moved behind a building, we sat outside enjoying the sunshine in the hopes that the might soon have the suspect pinned up against the police car across the street from us. No such luck, but we did overhear lots of conversations discussing the event. Apparently the guy was already being held by the cops but escaped (way to go, coppers!) and had been running for about five or ten minutes around the block. Considering all the people around, he should have given up a lot sooner.
By the time we got to the stores on Richmond, the sky had darkened considerably. We browsed but I didn’t end up buying anything – I guess my inner Dutch-ness won out over my urge to splurge. We decided to grab a bit to eat just in time, as no more than five minutes after we sat down the skies opened and it started to pour.
The restaurant was slow, but they had a young guy going around performing card tricks at your table. It was a fun distraction from the rain and the magician, Keith, sure ended our day with some giggles!
Considering everything that happened today, I still can’t get that chase out of my head! Have you ever seen someone ‘taken down’ by the cops?
Hey, I was going to see if you wanted to go “bridesmaid dress snoop shopping” on Richmond Row yesterday! Nope never saw cops taking anyone down, but have viewed more than my share of “end of the laneway” car accidents that included cop participation, including a canine chase one morning!
You better come up with some birthday ideas!

Three years ago while heading to Kitchener-Waterloo for holidays, I had to hit the gravel when the cops threw out a spike belt in an attempt at catching another vehicle. I’d never seen anything like it. I was shaken up the rest of the drive.
Erica does it still count if the cop was your oldest brother and the “bad guy” was your middle brother?!?! if so, than Yes, if not then, not as of yet..
and the whole not being able to come up with birthday ideas is okay, the people around you should know you and be able to see something and be like ” oooo, Erica would love this” and buy that for your birthday.
I hate giving people ideas, it’s like your picking out your own present, and they’re supposed to be surprises..
I totally agree with Jaime. It seems like you are asking for something when they want to know what you would like. Surprises are the best!
As for the take down. I once saw a guy rob a liquor store on Oxford. He came roaring out and took off to the townhouses behind. I was driving at that corner and didn’t know what to do as it all happened so quickly.
Good Lord woman! How are you ever going to top this shopping trip? Cop chase, card tricks AND TWO COOKIES! Now THAT is my kinda shopping trip.
Mom – well why didn’t you call?
Carol – omg, spike belt?? Scary. Good thing you didn’t drive over it!!
Jaime & Norma – I know, I agree, I would rather have someone (*cough*Mr X*cough*) think up something wonderful himself, but he keeps asking me ‘what do you want’? I guess it would be hard to top what he got me last year (which sits on my left-hand ring finger…)
Jan – 2 cookies? HECK NO – I left that place with half a dozen! Should have bought them out!
Married to it. But we’ve been out in the family vehicle and hubby has had to take some guy down – face down. In the gravel. Meanwhile I’m on the phone with 911 trying to get the poor guy some back-up seeing as he wasn’t carrying off-duty. Sheesh.
PS Hubby tried to jump a fence while chasing a guy once (middle of a main road) and went head over rump in the process. He said it just made him ran faster with rage once he got up, lol. And he was glad it was at night when nobody was around.

haha, you should tell him you want him to think of the present all by himself..
i agree it’s hard to top the ring, but he doesn’t really have to top it, every birthday / holiday with a gift is a new one, it just has to be thoughtful. ( see if Mr. X was smart he’d get something pretty that goes with the ring.. like a bracelet, or earings, or a necklace.. lol )
