Things We Throw

First, a bit of entertainment for you.

I had no idea what to expect when I found the link to this video. The link read “This can’t be real!” making it obvious that this would likely be a very cool, entertaining video. It is. Oh, it is.

This can’t be real!

The second link I have for you today, freaders, is to some images that may shock you. They’re not gory or gruesome, so don’t worry about that. However, you still may feel ill after seeing them. These images will make you think long and hard about consumption and the things we throw…out.

On a personal note, I’ve been meaning to start re-using plastic bags and also use the reusable bags that many stores give you (like Lululemon). I think this might just give me the motivation I need. For me, these pictures are not just shocking; they are motivational. I’m going to start one plastic bag at a time.

Do you re-use plastic grocery bags, or use the strong, re-usable ones?

I try to bring reusable bags but sometimes at the checkout I’ll forget that I have the reusable bags and I’ll get a plastic bag by accident.. so then I’m walking around with an empty reusable bag and a full plastic bag which looks dumb, so I’ll throw away the plastic bag at the mall and put my stuff in the reusable bag… oh my

Most of the time, I bring a large reusable bag to the supermarket to use. If I forget it, or it’s not big enough (I eat a lot!), I bring home the plastic bags but re-use them. They’re garbage can liners or bags I use to bring my lunch to work in. And then, every week, we bring all the used bags to the supermarket where they recycle them. Hooray for recycling!

Scott and I always use reusable bags when we do groceries, it makes me feel good. We have 2 large ones and 1 smaller one and normally all of our groceries fit in that. I HATE when I forget because the people bagging groceries do not put enough in each bag.

Are they going to recycle those plastic bottles?

The video was cool but like most, it was the pictures that really had an effect on me. Honestly, I feel a little sick to my stomach now - ugh.

as lame as i am, i usually take a bagpack and a few reusable bags with me when i go get groceries — otherwise my fingers turn white from carring those plastic bags from the store home!

In Ireland, they charge you for every plastic bag you use wherever you shop which makes it easier to remember to bring your re-usable bags. So I definitely use re-usable bags! I still forget sometimes though :(
