Not sure I'm feeling the clunkiness if you're pairing it with a dress though. I would personally opt for something a little more elegant and less chunky. If it weren't for my poor gait and need for comfort, I'd wear 2-3 inch heels everywhere! I'd love to be taller! I love the gladiators, too. My vote goes for black.
