I’ve gotten a few frantic calls and texts asking, “Are you alive???” so I thought I should probably clarify. No, I didn’t delete you off Facebook. I’m just taking a much needed hiatus from all things online social networking which includes Facebook, Twitter, and all blogs (except this one!)
It’s only been a couple of days but my mind feels a lot less cluttered, my time feels like it’s my own, and my floors and my hair look a heck of a lot shinier. (I should also admit that I’ve had one or two HGTV marathons.)
I’m sure you know as well as I do how quickly fifteen minutes online can turn into a guilt-ridden hour, and maybe you know all about the feeling of needing to know everything that is going through the minds of everyone in your life all the time, just because you can.
I thought it would be more difficult than it actually has been, really, and especially because right now I’m living hours away from the best kinds of real life distractions (my sisters, almost all of my friends, and my baby niece.) I find that it’s easy to find better things to fill my time so far, and surprisingly shopping and HGTV have not topped that list.
We’ll see how long it lasts, but right now it feels like it could be awhile.
When I’m using networking sites, I can’t imagine life without them. They’re SUCH a huge time suck, they cut into my studying by a crazy amount, and they’re addictively entertaining in some random way. But when I don’t have access to them, I don’t really miss them at all, and I LOVE all the free time! This is a really good idea — I really only swear off when I’m traveling w/o internet so couldn’t access them anyway, but I should try taking deliberate breaks sometimes.
.-= Married with Puppies´s last blog ..I can’t believe I’m admitting this! =-.
lol.. i was one of those checkin to see if you were alive! lmao.. i think it’s a pretty good idea.. all of this needing to know what everyone is doing all the time is a little silly.. but since we have grown up in that culture it can be hard to stop and think that “hey who cares about what so and so is doing” especially if you dont talk to them on a regular basis! we still have phones and if we want we could always talk to those ppl we care about and find out whats happening! it will be an interesting challenge.. let me know how it goes.. i will probably forget several times that your not on FB and try to msg you lol!
Savage Chickens!!!! pretty much the best part of our job at libro! i do still read your blog… all the time!
Yesss! That was pretty much for you. You should comment more. I’m going to e-mail you…
Good for you! All of this can get really overwhelming, it’s true. It has a way of sneaking up on you too. I took a day off from everything computer-related a few weeks ago and just went “dark” (I’ve been watching too much 24 lately) and it felt SO great. I accomplished so much around the apartment and had such amazing quality time with my husband/daughter, I decided I’m going to try to do it once a week from now on.
Enjoy your break! We’ll all still be here when you get back.
xo

Social media detox is like a fantastic vacation on a deserted island isn’t it!
I’ve done it a few times, and know exactly what it’s like.
How long do you think you can hold out?
