My living room needs a little love. Between the wedding which took over my life, and saving for a house, I haven’t really put any effort into making it a beautiful and comfortable place for us. Now that we are both working days, we spend a lot of time hanging out in this room together in the evenings and so it’s really coming to my attention that it needs an update in a big way.
I’m not going to post before photos yet, until I have the after photos, but we have so much old, secondhand furniture that just isn’t very nice that I’d like to get rid of or improve:
- An flowered lazyboy that used to be my Oma’s
- A small fake wood bookshelf that I’d like to replace with a big one
- A scalloped edged coffee table recently bought off craigslist which I will paint
- The old, IKEA (I haaaate having ikea furniture.) coffee table which is in the corner on it’s side, pretending not to exist
And what I need to get:
- A couch or something to replace the lazy boy
- Curtains for the windows
- A large bookshelf to replace small bookshelf
- A floor lamp
These are some photos I’ve saved on my computer over the past bit as inspiration. I apologize that I’m not sure of the source of any of them so if you know, just give me a heads up and I will credit it:

This coffee table looks a lot like mine and I’d like to paint mine white too. Also, we’ve been looking for a sectional but just can’t find one we love, but I love this one!

I saved this one when we first moved in as inspiration because with the location of the window and fireplace it’s the same layout as our room and the walls are a similar-ish colour.
And… that’s it! I thought I would have had more but most pictures seem to be kitchens and bedrooms. No wonder I haven’t done anything with ours, I need more ideas and inspiration. Any living rooms out there that you absolutely love?

I need some help with the decorating as well.
As you know, we have a mantle that looks like the second picture and I want to decorate it really nice for Christmas. If you come across any nice christmas mantles send them my way….
Awh I like your ikea coffee table, but I understand. I think the 2nd photo will be easier to incorporate (at least in terms of colour) than the first but I love lots of things about both! If you want a helping hand, please let me know I LOVE home projects

You forgot the futon! I like your living room though. Your apartment is just cute all together!

hahahaha Micaela it’s funny that you haaaaate IKEA furniture because that coffee table in the first picture that you love is an IKEA table
PS – let me know if you end up needing stuff from IKEA actually because we could go together if you want … I need some stuff soon too.
It took us soo long to finally get rid of the hand-me-down stuff and buy our own couches, etc. I kind of like the combo we have now of new and old. I love the new wardrobe we just got from IKEA but it was not cheap! I think IKEA is getting better at having (or maybe I’m just starting to notice!) nice stuff if you’re willing to spend the money. Good luck, its totally worth the work you put in!
Stef – that is pretty ironic! I just hate ikea/my coffee table because it dents SO easily and isn’t good quality and it makes me feel like a student. I did buy an Ikea desk recently that I love, so I am just an all around walking contradiction apparently.
Laura – yah we spent a bunch on the desk I just mentioned from Ikea and it is really nice. I’m not a total Ikea-hater I’d just rather not have ALL ikea!

We got our sectional couch from Leons a couple of years ago, and for the most part I love it. It is big and has a pull out bed in one half. The only part I don’t like, and didn’t think about before buying a sectional was that the 2 sections come apart if they are not wedged against a wall and ar sat on with too much force.
I’m still at the point in my life where the best furniture is free furniture. Other than our bar stools (ikea), bookshelf (ikea) and our two dressers (also ikea) all of the furniture in our house was free! Including bed frame, couch, desk, and tv. Go us!
Very cute living rooms. If you need DIY help I’ll be home in February to be of assistance! If you can rip the baby out of my arms …

Love the coffe table in the second pic. It would really finish of our living room. We have recently redecorated it in a light green shade of paint. Do you know where I could buy it?
