Update on Life!

in ottawa, summer, summer work, university

Hey all, it’s Lauren. I’m taking a break from studying for my last 2 exams of first year! I’m pretty sure Carleton has some of the latest exams EVER-example- my last two are on Monday, and Leah had her last one on April 11. Almost 2 weeks ago! However the smell of summer is in the air here in Ottawa. People are walking outside, enjoying the Parliament buildings (which I should probably do one of these days…), tanning on the grass on campus, and there is rushing water in the river on campus! It’s so exciting to almost be done first year. It seems like just yesterday I was planning on going out west, and not even going to university yet! I’m definitely glad I chose to come to such a beautiful city though. I’ve had so many great life experiences, and made amazing new friends, who I’ll never forget.

You know how in movies at university you see circles of people on the grass studying? I never thought I’d see that in real life, but last week as I was walking to an exam with a friend we kept seeing all these circles of people studying, and the first thing she said was “Lauren! It’s like the movies!” It’s so true! Like in an ad for a university:

This summer I plan on working the same place I worked last summer, at a Conservation Area outside of our town. I also got my SmartServe in January, so I want to get a job serving, maybe at our local golf and ski club, where some of us work in the winter also.

Do you remember when you were done your first year?

Ps. Some of you may have heard about the girl(Nadia Kajouji) from Carleton who had gone missing (article found here). She has been found this past weekend (article found here). I didn’t know her, but a friend of mine did, and I wish her family the best. There has been tons of action to ensure that this doesn’t happen again here in our community.

I remember all the girls in my residence were SO SAD to be done first year and move out of residence and so was I. One by one as everyone finished their exams we’d all ride down on the elevator (or take the stairs, we were on the third floor and afraid of gaining the frosh 15 so there was always that dilemma: elevator or stairs?) with them and say our sad goodbyes outside when their parents came to pick them up.

That’s funny what you said about study circles. We didn’t have like one huge yard where everyone sat at Laurier (plus it’s cold most of the school year) so I didn’t notice that, but I do remember noticing it when I first got to South Africa where it was warm all the time, and really wanting to be in one of those circles.

Western is all about the circles. And hanging out on the concrete beach.
I don’t remember how my first year ended. I was in some crazy relationship and eventually headed to therapy. Not good times.

I went to FSU and on our campus, we had a few green areas where people would sit in a circle studying, talking, or even sun tanning (i’m not kidding!) I even saw people swimming in our fountain before on a hot day. It was weird, yet very funny. I used to love sitting on campus like that.

After my first year of college I went back home and worked at Borders. I liked books. :)

Lauren- people started sun tanning here last week! bikinis and everything. They lay by the rushing river and I guess pretend it’s a beach?

guelph is TOTALLY into study circles. It helps having a giant field in the middle of campus. Frisbee freaking crazy….

that’s SO sad about that girl. it must’ve been so scary on campus when she went missing? I’d be scared…because I watch too much csi and crossing jordan!

It was totally scary allie. Especially with all the stuff about the sexual assults earlier on in the year. I swear, I go to a safe school!

I wonder how they decide how long the exam period will be? That is a pretty big difference between Guelph and Carleton. At the end of my first year I had 4 exams in the first 5 days of exams! but I was a residence assistant so I haaad to stay in res until the last day of exams, it was actually a pretty fun two weeks!

This is cute! I love the technique of making your bf think it was HIS idea all along! :)
